I recently read a post about survival gear and I would like to expand on it a but. This is some gear that I carry in my SUV at all times. Its for everything from road side break downs to social break down. and a bit in between

Small suppy of my percriptons
Kershaw Blur folding knife
Bic lighter, 2-3000 books of matches, & road flares
100' of 5/8" rope (again to many uses)
25' tow strap
jumper cables
first aid kit with quick clot, BP kit, stethoscope, latex gloves, OTC meds, etc
Surefire "backup" LED flash light. Love these! 4 spare batteries
Wool Blanket
10'x12' Tarp (fold down SUV seats wrap up in tarp and blankt and you sleep pretty good, get the trap with the silver reflective on ONE side)
box of trash bags
roll of papertowels (stuff like this is the most used as you spill coffee more offten than you get stranded in a blizzard, hopefully!)
6 liters of treated or bottled water (again you use often)
Gorrila Duct Tape (million uses)
2 pairs of clean socks
compass, GPS, & maps for WHERE EVER I am
Note book & pencil & pens, another very useful item for everyday.
Deck of plaing cards reliveing the boredome helps calm the anxity which in turn will improve your ability to reason. Also can be used as cookie crumps if placed in order on ones trail.
Winchester 94 30-30 with 2 boxes of ammo
50' of fishing line. It can be used as a snare, to make a shelter, to fish, and it works way better than string if one HAS to stich ones self up.
Fishing hooks and small sinkers. I hate fish but people who don't might also include a travel fishing set for when you run into that perfect fishing spot.!
Leatherman
sheath knife
In Addition to that I always carry, most offten a sig P229R 9mm. I put 2 15rd mags in the car. I always have a pocket knife, lighter, cell phone, belt, and sholder bag
The messenger type bag is very important if you should be forced to leave you auto and want to take any of your supplies.
Because I know it will be asked, no, no one can tell I am carrying survival gear as my SUV has many very wonderful compartments. Even people who get in the car cannot tell that all this gear is in there, except for the blanket, tarp and first aid kit. Now I am sure that this is not the "Perfect" survival list, but thats just not getting lost in the first place. So add what you think and tell me about yours

Add several 5 gallon gas cans of fuel. Lose the match books. A BIC style lighter is far more reliable and works if it gets wet. Books of matches don't.
"...cookie crumps if placed in order on ones trail...." Good for baiting song birds for food, but not much else.
"...can be used as a snare..." Nope, too soft for a snare, but a package of picture hanging wire can be. Small and cheap for 50 feet.
"...Small suppy of my perscriptons..." Think way more if the drugs are needed to keep you functioning. 3 months at least.
"...100' of 5/8" rope..." Polypropolene. Nylon stretches and isn't as strong. Cheaper too.
"...I hate fish..." Ditto. Just the smell of non-fresh fish makes me ill. Trade goods until you get really hungry.
"...folding knife...sheath knife..." One good knife. A Swiss Army Knife will do, but a good sheath knife will do everything a small knife will do and might replace an ax or machete. A machete is better than a hatchet, but not an ax.
Oh and, with respect, a dictionary so you can learn how to spell.

OK Sunray, you owe me a new keyboard.

That dictionary comment made me laugh coffee all over it, respectfully. :D

I don't know if this is really needed for survival, but throw in some 2 X 4's cut to fit nicely in your car somewhere. They have tons of uses, such as a base for jacking up your car(in case the ground is soft), to chokes to stop a car from rolling, to securing big objects in a car.

A BIG fat candle. Something like a foot across and yea high.

I had one going a few days once in a winter storm when I had to wait in the days before satellite comms.

Now it would be a LED type camper light and extra batteries for them or just the charger.

In a Steel Footlocker in my old Step Van, is...

One WWI US issue Shovel...

Jumper Cables ( old 'heavy', long ones made from Welding Cable)

a Lowish, fat, 6 Ton Hydraulic Jack, and large 4-way Lug Wrench.

Gallon of Water, and extra Oil, Brake Fluid.

100 ft heavy Cord...a dozen small white Towels, Box of general Tools...large, sharp lock-back Knife.

One change of clothes...Rain Coat...Gloves...Sharp medium size Camping Hatchet with longish Coltsfoot Handle.

30 Ft Logging Chain wrapped figure '8' style around front Bumper Brackets.

Variously, in 31 years of living here...the only thing out of the Oufit I've ever felt called on to use, are, the Logging Chain for pulling someone out of sand or ditch...and, the Brake Fluid, for occasions of finding my own or someone else's Master Cylinder 'low'.

Near it, an old, 5 Gallon 'Safety Can' of Gasolene, Jerry Can shape, in a hold down, strapped.

Also, a long, four Battery 'MagLight' Flashlight, focusable trype, mounted in a 1940s flashlight Clip holder, on the side of the Doghouse.

I've given out Gas quite a few times to people who ran out...heck, even ran out a couple times myself...

Could be better, but, that's always been the usual outfit.

I live downtown, and the old Van never ventures out of Town ( would cruise for ever and sweetly at 47 mph...but too slow for any modern Interstate Highway...)
