The Love of Hand Cannons

Oh noes, I should know that a bullet is going to automatically moon walk from my locked ammo box and into my 460 stealthly while I cleaned it. Then according to you the hammer is going to clock its self back and then then trigger is going to be pulled by the leprachaun that is hiding behing me .

Oh yeah I should know better. Silly me.
The four rules should always be obeyed because when they aren't bad things can and will happen...
Rule #2 is: "Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy."
You should look up the other three, it just may save your life of the lives of people around you.

You can make fun all you want but you are unsafe and you proved it by posting that picture!

You are not wrong, but his point about the ammo being locked etc also is not wrong. In fact, pretty much anytime anyone cleans their guns without the gun being pointed downrange would technically be a violation of rule #2. NOTHING in my house qualifies as something I am willing to destroy, so does that mean I can never take my gun out of its case while at home?

When all I wanted to do was celebrate the love of 'hand cannons' we now get into back biting and what. Come on, 'the highroad,' can we save the insults for the rest of our daily lives and just have a little fun. Okay so he points the .460 at himself in the pic, and if it goes off then Darwin is proved right. But if he checked to make sure it was safe and it does not go off, it's just a pic for cripes sake.

Glad to have learned about the .460 and the rest, my eyes are bigger over getting some wrist-punishing, arthritis inducing, hand-cannons.

This thread actually got me looking again at the specs for the X frames. The 20 foot barrels obviously are extremely heavy, but I was surprised by the weight of the 4 inch 500, listed at 56 ounces. Now, this is heavy, but really not all that heavy when you are talking about woods guns for protection against large nasty things.

My SBH in 44 (with a 7.5 inch barrel) comes in at 52 ounces, is longer and thus a bit more cumbersome to carry, and doesn't hold a candle to even a reduced 500 load. SRHs are also right in the middle 50s, and again don't have nearly the power. Even the Alaskan is mid-40s, as is the GP100!

I had planned on using my 4 inch GP100 as a woods gun for hunting here in the Northeast, which should be more than sufficient for anything I'm likely to find. But a 4 inch Xframe isnt really that much larger or unwieldy given its power. And as I handload, I could load a more geographically appropriate load, since i don't need to take out any Panzers in the area.

Well Handcannoneers, I need a handcannon. I'm shopping for a SBH .44 5.5" bbl. This gun's sole purpose is hitting targets from 15 to 200 yards. My concerns are power and accuracy. Am i going to get bored of the power of this gun and be left wanting more too soon? Also, is a box-stock Ruger accurate enough for fun at these ranges or will i need to get it worked over? Am i ever going to feel like I'm out-shooting the gun? I do plan on handloading for it and working up accurate loads.

does this count?

it aint mine but i did shoot it over the weekend.

:D

400gr.'s and shes got some kick.

Today I took my beloved 5 and a half redhawk for a little plinking.

I forgot how much walking one must do, since my plinking target was jumpin a good 20 feet away at a time.

BIG FUN!

Texas, i love those vids and i drool over them often, but i think you have an obligation to make more videos. Those vids are over a year old. The public needs more! You have the burden of a celebrity.

I've even started trying the hands-between-knees position, but only with a lowely .357 "magnam".

Also, to the OP wanting a short double-gun, have you seen these?

Anybody else own a Linebaugh cartridge? I'd love a 475 or 500 like TEXAS'. Also right up there is the 500 WE from freedom arms. I'll be looking for one of these next summer! or maybe just a lil 454.

they have one for sale @ the range. made by Linebaugh .500, no ivory handle or anything, $$$3K.

:what:

I want to get a ATF legal short barreled double barrel shotgun with the stock removed, ten inches.

I think I'm too utilitarian

Those two statements both being in the OP made me laugh

I think a 10mm 1911 with DoubleTaps in it could be considered a Hand Cannon.

No. Maybe a 1911 converted to 460 Rowland. For some reason I keep looking at the kit.

When I think of hand cannons I often think of this

45/70 revolver

Everytime i think about getting a BFR in .475 Linebaugh or something similar, i think, "I could have this same gun(roughtly) for the same money, in 45/70, How awesome would that be?." and then i don't buy the lesser caliber. Of course, it's also hard to justify a 45/70 revolver.

BFR short cylinder, .475 Linebaugh is THE best deal in big bores, pretty much ever. Before Obamamania, they went for 500 bucks...

I turned down buying a .475L BFR a few months ago for about $650-750, i forget exactly. I knew it was a good price, but I'd also have to buy a whole reloading set if i wanted to actually shoot it. Plus, I'm not a fan of the plastic/rubber grips. They just don't fit my hand at all.

Hmmm, .45ACP, eh? How's THAT workin' out for ya? Got two cylinders for it, maybe?

Actually MC, the cylinder can be cut for moonclips and .45acp can be shot outta a .460. Why one would want to do this I don't know.

Years ago I had a Ruger Blackhawk .44 that I considered a hand cannon. Nowadays my 7.5'' 629 feels like a peashooter compared to my PC .460. Everything is relative, I guess.

hand cannons

large caliber pistols have their uses other then machismo reasons. After a close incounter with a black bear on a high mountain trail several years ago while deer hunting, I purchased a 3 inch magna ported S&W 44 mag. and a custom made cross draw holster. the cross draw is so I can still carry my deer rifle on my right sholder and the pistol on my left hip.

Ruger SRH 44 mag, S@W 629 44 mag, Ruger sbh convertible 45 acp/lc, Uberti 45lc, Uberti cap n ball 45 with con cyl, You could say hogs legs kinda grow on you.ps my wife has shot all of them.
