The Love of Hand Cannons

ArchAngelCD -With a 50 yard "0" I hold up about a shy 1/16" of the front sight to shoot 150 yards. It will drop almost 2' if you hold dead on.

That's less than I thought. Thanks for the information and the videos. I think I saw them a while back but it was still cool watching them again.

I shoot a T/C Contender from SSK Industries in 375JDJ, it is a 444 case necked down to .375 and I reload the 220 gr. Hornady FP to 2300 fps and the 270 gr. Hornady to 2100 fps. The recoil is fairly brisk as you can imagine, but controllable. I also shoot a Savage Striker in 308 that I will be deer hunting this year with. Try this website for hand cannons:

I have waiting years for this. I am officially a Hand Cannoneer. That feels good just to type. I bought a Ruger Super Blackhawk! Finally got it out and shot it today and it's a little kitten. Hardly any kick. I'll admit that was a little disapointing, but this will help me shoot it more. Only had cheap ammo today, but a friend is going to let me brew some hand loads with his help. Soon i'll be shooting like you guys! I hope.

Anyway, Pics: (sorry, i thought these would shrink a little automatically.)

Measure 1 5/8 at a lasered 35 yards off an improvised rest. The ammo was American Eagle. This gun is capable of much more with different ammo and an improved operator.

atlanticfire and Giver of Doom need to post more info.

I've only owned this gun 2 months and i already want something bigger. I'm even worried that a .454 wouldn't be big enough. Local gun store had a .500 fairly cheap, but it had a long barrel and i would rather have a shorter one.

Atlanticfire's looks like maybe a 500BFR?

I like shooting my 500 however I fine that I'm not very consistant with it. Some days I can put 20 rounds into the bullseye at 20 yards with no problem and then other days I can't get a group under 12 inches. i know it's me, I just can't seem to get it under control.

As for future handcanons, i'd like to get into the TC prohunter series, both rifle and pistol, chambered for rifle loads for hunting.

Springfield Armory 1911A2 SASS

Here's my 308 WIN 1911. I haven't seen too many, after shooting it a few times I think I understand why. It reminds me of a WWII newsreel segment of a German 88 AA round going off. I guess I need to investigate some of those managed recoil rounds. Nothing like carrying some 150 gr. ballistic tips locked & loaded.

i would love to own a 500 S.W,world most powerfull hand gun.the 400 grain f.m.j is a monster.here grizzle,come get some of this.

That Davide Pedersoli Howdah pistol in post #38 would be mighty tempting if it was a couple of $100 cheaper (cheaper than the current sale price.) http://www.cabelas.com/p-0058399.shtml

Many years ago I when I was young and stupid, bought a 16 gauge shotgun barrel from Dixie Gun Works, threaded and plugged the breech, cut it down to about 12", and made a literal "hand cannon". Loaded with about 70 grains of black powder and a fiber wad, it was unbelievably loud. Much louder than typical 12 gauge breech-loading signal cannons loads. I'd kind of like a safe version now...

It's far from the most powerful handgun considering TC makes pistols chambered in high powered rifle calibers. But yeah, I guess technically it is the most powerful handgun in a handgun caliber?

Either way, if you ever have the chance to shoot one, do it. The 400gr is nasty. I've shot the 500gr also but I really didn't notice much difference between the two. I guess my hand was just already at it's max for experienced recoil. haha.

It's the beauty of handguns, like motorcycles or guitars. There's a ton of craftsman who made works of art like these steel beasts of wheelguns and 1911s. My DanWesson .44Mag CTG, fixed 5" barrel. Loaded with Magnums for deer or bear, loaded with Specials to show noobs how some pistols run more than one ammo..

The plastics and polymers are great for tactical and service apps., but these babys are timeless.

I dunno if my 44 Vaquero is a cannon... it's definitely a hog leg. Dad's SBH hunter model with compressed powder bear loads --yike! .357 Maximum fit the bill?

Worst cannon I ever fired was an Encore with a .30-06 barrel. OUCH!

Dr. Rob, to be honest I just recently purchased a .357 myself. I've fired both a 357 and a 44mag before but it's been a long time.

I guess since I have my 500, the 357 just seemed tame to me but everytime I've been to the range (indoor range) with it now I've had someone come over to see what I'm shooting because they say they can feel it in their chest when it goes off. I gues it technically doesn't fall into the "cannon" catagory but i have to say, that gun does draw attention that I'm used to from only firing my 500.

I don't really have any that qualify at the current moment, but coming soon on my list of weapons to buy:

Taurus Raging Judge Magnum.

Marlin 336 .30-30 (I know, not a handcannon, but that rifle purchase leads to:)

BFR .30-30 to go with the 336.
