Forgive me if this rehashes some other thread. I searched but did not find this question discussed elsewhere.

I have been shooting Schuetzen 2F in my percussion revolvers and have been pleased with it. My blackpowder supplier says Hodgdon recently acquired Goex, tweaked the formula a bit, and the new Goex is pretty close to Swiss in quality, which he says is the ultimate real blackpowder.

Have any of you had a chance to range test the new Goex versus other brands? What do you think?

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Know nothing about the new Goex, but know what I have burns pretty dirty.

Graf and the Schuetzen BP are one and the same, except Graf's is considerably lower in price.

Both are made in the same plant, the Mad Monk ran tests and proved conclusively they are exact in all respects.

Schuetzen is a german black powder isn't it?
Swiss bp comes from the "poudrerie d'Aubonne"... I think it can be compared to 777. I would be surprised to read tests showing a goex on the same level than swiss... :D

It is true that Hodgdon recently acquired Goex. There's no evidence they also 'tweaked the formula a bit'.

Goex is reintroducing Goex Express after having discontinued it.
It was suppose to be a better formula than regular Goex to begin with.

March 21, 2011. We have been waiting for GOEX Express. GOEX explained the delay to us - they are withdrawing GOEX Express powders (not the traditional GOEX powders, GOEX powders are in stock and well supported, and a delight for all) from the market as of now, March 2011. GOEX plans are to re-introduce the GOEX Express product in January 2012.

November 21, 2011. GOEX 3F Express! We got 50 pounds! Call now! $19.50 delivered for 25 or 50 pounds! If you want less, we can figure that cost, too! Remember, GOEX withdrew their EXPRESS powders from the market earlier this year, and plan a re-introduced product early in 2012. So this is a real find, for someone. Because of the very limited quantity, we are only taking phone or walkin orders for this FFFg GOEX Express powder.

Here's an excerpt of a BPCR review of it from 2006:

Now, as for quality:
* ... Express (the only batch- Dec 2005) is 5% less dense than Swiss 1.5. So it takes more powder (more cost) to achieve the same velocity.
*... Swiss uses Blackthorn Alder for charcoal, recognized to be the best wood to use for BP. Goex Express is using Maple, the same that they use in all their BP grades ... inferior wood.
* ... Express is supposedly to 'burn moist'. Not possible in the reaction of the chemicals.
*... SD's in single digits ... some shooters say they have achieved them but not me and I'm annal when it comes to reloading.
*... Express does leave a 'wet hygroscopic foul' and am gonna tell ya... there is substantially more wet foul (potassium carbonate) in the barrel than Swiss 1.5. So, swab after all your shots.
* ... Express is supposed to generate higher velocities than Swiss. My side by side comparisons using 70 gr of each, Express is less than 50 fps faster.

I'm not bashing Express - only facts that I have determined shooting the stuff. I am not impressed with it but I do like Goex Cartridge for BPRC shooting.

Bottom line ... IMHO, the demand side will never reduce the price of Express. Plus, I'm not reading rave reviews about Express on the various forums.

As stated above, Goex Express is a different powder than the regular Goex. There's no evidence that the regular Goex formulation has been changed.

Schuetzen v. Goex

I have never used anything except Goex 3F and 2F in my rifles and percussion revolvers.

Is Schuetzen better than Goex?

Thanks.
