The RUGER OLD ARMY Club

I am promising myself to get a ROA so I can join the club ,I promise me :p and yet, another good reason to get another bp revolver :D

Hey jgray ~
I'm still makin' 'em. Production is slow. You're on the list. Got 8 shooter's ahead o' ya. Takes about 3 to 4 weeks per kit. Made 4 kits so far. Wish someone else would start makin' 'em too!

They're not for sale. They're free of charge. Can't expect y'all to buy sumpin y'aint never seen afore. Plus, I don't know if anyone's gonna think they're worth a hoot, 'til a group of ya can compare your experiences w/'em.

We'll hafta see where this thing goes. Ideally, high production could make 'em available for all the Italian revolvers too. As well as in 1/4 -28 threads for long guns, howdahs, shotguns, & pistols. I'm not set up to do high production. 'Bout all I can do is try to get the ball rollin'. I'll share w/anyone how to make the entire kit: machining, heat treating, everything.

I don't see any other way to get an honest opinion than to offer 'em up free so noboby's got anything to loose. Try 'em out & tell us what ya think...good or bad.

Kindest Regards,
Doak
Thanks so much Doak! Appreciate your efforts and all you do!

Regards,

jgray

Doak if it helps

You can take my name off your list and move one of these other guys up... I'm gonna stick with the nipples I have. They take a cap well and I have no problems igniting Triple 7 or Black powder...

Seating the nipples? Why?
The good Colonel Cooper stated the the loudest thing you will ever hear is a click, when you wanted a boom.
That said,Whitetailbob, try this instead... seat your caps, then cycling your action(safely of course)rest your hammer on the cap, press your thumb up against the bottom of the hammer spur, if a cap isn't seated you will feel it seat doing this, and have one less bit of kit to keep up with.
good luck
robert

I've always done it the way Robert suggests... I wouldn't if I shot on a public range cause I imagine it'd raise all kinds of hell but for me, if i point it in a safe direction and observe all the other rules it works safely and has for more years than I care to admit...

I've always in the past used the stock Ruger nipples, I'm using the Treso nipples on this one and they seem to function as intended with most #11 caps. I also have a bunch of Remington #10's and bought more the other day (cause they were there for $5.49 a tin) so I guess I return to seating the caps with the hammer if I don't use them all up on the Centaure's..

thanks fella's with the stock ruger nipples 10's are too tight i have to have the hammer hit the nipples and push them on even after i seat them the 11's fit nice but i seat them just a little cause i think hang fires start more if a cap comes of while shooting rather than spark by a bullet plus this way i know my round will ignight that is a huge peace of mind when i want my round to go off without a hitch -what is your guys favorite BP load thanks i can see this this club is going to be great !!!

anyone use the pyrodex pre formed powder charges 35gr they are pretty slick they work great with the origional nipples that have a larger flash hole. i bought a set of uncle mikes nipples with a smaller flash hole supposed the keep the back pressure from kicking the shot nipple and getting stuck while cocking for the next shot they do work good for that but they would not set the pre formed powder charges off very good so i will only use the old nipples with the larger flash hole for the precharged loads thought id share my findings

I've found that none of the #11 caps will seat on my Old Army's nipples or their replacements. #10 Remington caps are the only ones to fit without a hassle.

anyone interested in trading a set of new ruger old army nipples for one of my percushion cap seaters please let me know these work great and fit perfectly in your hand and they stand up so no rolling off the shooting table lol

I cant wait to get a ROA so I can join  and I will ;) , but I can't wait  , but I have too :( ahhh Geeez :scrutiny: :p hmmm blued or stainless?

Doak, that's some neat stuff you got going on there. It's cool to see such creativity and innovation from all the different people over the years that have shot and loved these guns. I think ole Bill Ruger would be proud of the fanbase his greatest revolver has attracted.

Robert, that's a cool trick to seating the nipples I will have to try. Learn something new every day!

whitetailbob, I too use the preformed powder charges. I found out after the fact that they do have a "correct" side and you need to pay attention when you load them. I forget which is which now, but one side is shiny and the other is dull, and one or the other needs to face towards the nipple. I don't remember where I read that, I couldn't even find it on their website just now, so I'll have to look around. But I've found, properly seating the caps, having the pellets in the correct way, and seating the ball with just the right pressure are essential to consistency with these pellets. Otherwise I get some duds.

7.5 inch blue old army with fixed sights

7.5 inch blue old army with fixed sights found one for 700 bucks heard they are rare it is used but in good shape anyone know

Yup. I don't see 'em at gun shows anymore. I'd buy it IF it's in good shape.
The big issue for me is the bore. Y'all may know this, but ROA's are/were required to be test fired before they leave the factory, AND NOT CLEANED. I don't know what MORON is in charge of that policy.

It's not an issue w/the stainless ROA's.

I have a blued smooth top w/bore damage caused by that ASININE policy. The guy lied to me about why he was sellin' it. And I didn't remove the cylinder & flashlight the bore. Was unused & beautiful on the outside. And the price was right. So I'd a bought it anyway, even if I'd known. I just woulda fiercely bargained against the damage.

If ya have access to the revolver, check out the bore, & if it's not pristine, work the issue for an adjusted price...would be my advice.

Wow, I'd never heard that one Doak. I've owned three blue models and all arrived with pristine bores and cylinders. Same for the two stainless guns I've had.
