Well, I do enjoy my Old Army Revolvers. I have three now. Just had the following tuned up by Munden Enterprises a few months ago. Now a nice 2# trigger pull. It was creepy and maxed out my trigger test spring.... It shoots a bit left. Might have the barrel turned down the road.... Anyway thought I'd join the club! I don't get out a lot with my Old Army revolvers, but do enjoy it when I do.

Anybody in the Los Angeles area interested in trading a ROA in excellent condition for a new Uberti Colt 1860 Army AND a Uberti Colt 1861 Navy?

It might help to post a current pic of your ROA along with some details on conditions....also, what you think the ROA is worth.

Chili_Peppers cut down ROAs.......

Nice looking ROAs there ! Could you kindly tell me who did the work on those two pistols? I have a couple here too that I want something like that done. I know some folks here would think that's blasphemy, but hey, they do look cool. If they call that blasphemy, then why on earth do they praise Dave Clements beautiful 'monstrous" creations !! Very nice work there ! :)

Cut down old armys

Sumikito,

The project started about 6 years ago. I had been shooting a pair of blued 5 1/2" in CAS for a couple of years when I thought it would be cool to have a pair of birds head ROAs. I started looking around and found that MK Technologies made aftermarket birds head grip frames for Rugers including the OMs. so I bought a pair. Not wanting to mess up my blued guns I found a pair of used 7 1/2" stainless fixed sights at a good price, Back in 2006 that could still happen. Using a Dremel and files I fit the new frames to the guns. The problem at this time was the barrels were just to long and hard to shoot one handed so my shooting buddy "Fireball" (who is also a gunsmith) said he could cut and re crown the barrels. We decided on 3 1/2" because it give you the same sight radius as a 4 5/8" vaquero. He cut the barrels, re crowned them and remounted the blade front sight. While he was at it he beveled the front of the cylinder to make re holstering a bit easier. I lightened the mainspring by cutting off one and a half coils and have shot them like that for the last 5 years. This past summer I added the wrap around brass front sight and just recently had the hammers reconfigured to match the shape and width of a Super Blackhawk. That's the story behind the " Pepper Poppers" I don't really care what someone else thinks about them, I built them to be "Cool" and to shoot as fast as possible. Thanks for your interest

Best regards,

Chili

Chili: Can you tell me more about the hammer reconfiguration? I have a stainless ROA that I would like to have modified so as my short stubby thumb can more easily reach it, but I can't seem to find anyone who can/will work with stainless, and I can't seem to find a Bisley type hammer either.

SBH hammer reshaping

Rodwha

I too looked for a solution to the lack of availability of a Bisley or SBH hammers so after looking for a while I decided to take maters into my own hands. I have SBH hammers on my short vaqueros so I took one out and studied the basic shape and measurements. I had a spare old army hammer and with a vice and torch heated it up and re shaped the spur to match the profile of a SBH hammer. While happy with the way it felt and functioned, I wanted more. (Note: that just bending the hammer spur down made a huge improvement in the feel while cocking the hammer) I took the reshaped hammers over to a friend who does welding and asked him if he could add some material to the sides with his tig welder. I brought the SBH hammer with me as a model and he was able to add material as I had asked welding them up just a bit oversized so I could clean them up and finish shaping them just as I wanted. I used a bench sander and dremel tool to finish shaping them and made make them match, polished them on a polishing wheel and that's it.
Over the years I have no problem coming up with ideas and working on my own stuff to get something I want or different. It would have been way easier if someone would just make the parts I dream up but what ever. I'm very happy with the end result and they shoot like a dream. Thanks for the kind words and interest.

Best regards,

Chili

Birds head grips

Taurusbob,

That is a beautiful pistol WOW! I ordered my BH grip frames from Brownells six or seven years ago, I'm not sure the company that made them still does or not. The company name is MK Technologies and that's about all I know. I wish I could find another pair myself. One option that I have seen on vaqueros is to round butt the existing grip frames, it makes them a bit smaller at the heel and is kinda a cross between a bisley and plow handle. I also know they make an aftermarket grip frame that is closer in size to a Colt frame. I have never seen one so I'm not sure how much smaller they really are. Hope that helps some and let me know if you find anything. Thanks for the kind words about my pistols and good luck!

Best regards,

Chili

Chili: A few more questions if I may…

1) Doesn't heating the hammer up with a torch discolor the steel? If so it just buffs out?

2) Where did you place the heat? I assume in the middle of the hammer protrusion? Oxy/Acet torch?

3) What did you use to actually bend the hammer? How did you make sure it was evenly bending?

I am also wanting to bend my Pietta '58's hammer as it's far worse that my ROA for me to reach. Being blued and softer steel I'd imagine it much easier to work with.

Thanks Chili_pepper917 for letting us all know how your two ROA shorties were built. Very nice fast shooting snubies I bet. And I am still open to inherit, buy, trade, steal or borrow your shortie too Taurusbob! Great work on an already peerless pistol guys! .............Hmmmmm, I wonder if maybe I should have one of mine shortened to 2 1/2 inches. The muzzle blast, fireball, and boom would be a blast! Fun, fun, fun! .........Now to see what Dave Clements has to say about that idea!

SUMIKITO,

If you can get me a date with Sophia Loren, and stay with her for a month.
I would give you my ROA snub nose..... plus I would pay shipping to you.
After a month with her, I would be to weak to shoot any gun :D I would
need 6 more months with her so she can nurse me back to health.
Do we have a deal?

Driving me crazy !

Oh my, first it was Taurusbob teasing me on his nice snubby a while back, then Chilipepper comes along and makes me drool, and now Rodman579 hammers the last nail on this already nuts with envy SUMIKITO ! There's a conspiracy somewhere here, I tell yah folks. When will it stop ! ................ I need a snubby ROA ! I'll put a small scope and a laser on it. I'll show these guys ! :)

SUMIKITO,

Will it look like this?
