Has anybody heard of a Barnes Triple Shock being loaded for 22LR?
I know they make a .224" dia. 53grain bullet, but don't know if a 22LR
can "toss" it hard enough for proper expansion/penitration. Mabe I'm
being "unrealistic" but I think it would expand the 22LR's Effectiveness
for hunting. Also I don't know if it will work at all in 22LR.I plan to use
a bolt action rifle(If it matter's).

I started a similar thread to this a couple weeks ago, another poster did a few days after that. The concensus between those 2 threads was that CCI mini-mags were top dog, if a little spendy, and federal bulk pack if you needed to stay on the cheaper side of things.

Hope that helps.

And- WELCOME ABOARD. The search function is your friend.:D

Thank you for the reply Ben. Although, I'm still curious as to what the
results of the Barnes(Mabe Custom Load) would be. I have E-Mailed
Barnes, asking about possible production of this round. A Continued
and dedicated following may result in a new option for the 22LR
hunter(s).I was imagining a 1500+fps round with about 40 grains of
weight. I Like the Speer/Gold Dot Technology. I also love my large
bore guns(which this ammo is already made for), but the relative
cost/fun factor of Hunting with the 22LR is hard to resist.

Reading what you are discussing about upgrading the .22 Lone Rifle cartridge to the high priced bullets and the new technology would, IM(not so)HO defeat the whole idea of the .22 LR as an inexpensive plunking and small game hunting cartridge. It would remove some of the fun out of it. Thankfully they will not stop manufacturing the variety of .22 cartridges now on the market. There so many .22 bottle necks (.22 Bee to the .22-250) out there. So why waste time in improving the little ol' .22 Long Rifle. How can you improve such a fun inexpensive calibre?

I use Winchester's High Velocity Hollow points in 37 grain. They work the best in my 3 rifles and Colt Woodsman semi-auto.

You are definately correct when you say it is a ball to engage in the sport of .22 Long Rifle shooting.

A .224" bullet won't fit in a .22LR case. .22LR bullets are heel-based, which means the part of the bullet which is inside the case is smaller than the bore diameter. The case itself is actually .22" in diameter.

A 53-grain bullet is likely to be too long to be loaded in a regular .22LR case anyway. Aguila makes a 60gr .22LR load, and they have to use a special short case to do it. The bullet is longer than the case. That load is also subsonic. The bullet takes up so much space there isn't much left for powder. A similar load using a Barnes TSX would probably have really poor terminal performance, as I imagine the TSX is designed for 3000fps+ out of .223s and .22-250s.

If my memory serves me correctly, .22 Magnum uses .224" projectiles. However, a 53-grain bullet is probably still too heavy for good performance. When you've got the V-max and Gold Dot loads already available in the .22WMR, I don't think it's worth the trouble.

CCI Quik-Shok is by far the most potent. Go to the proper end of the horse for information.

Here is an abbreviated version of all the data:

..............Bul-Wt...V-muz....V-50.....E-50.......E-100
MMag..........36hp...1260.....1104.......97...........80
MMag HV.....40rn...1235......1092......106..........88
Stinger........32hp...1640.....1292......119..........81
Velocitor......40hp...1435.....1230......134.........104
Quik-Shok....32hp...1640.....1601......182.........173
Lap SA........40rn....1345
Fed.............36hp...1280

Something seems fishy here . CCI Quick Shok and Stingers should not be that different ballistically
I say typoe

I don't hunt (yet), but having put a fair amount of this through a Ruger Mk I, and I'm impressed with this round. It's accurate, and at 60 grains, it'd be my first choice round for self-defense (if all I had to choose from was .22 :what: ) YMMV.

quikshok 22lr is not good for anything big. it only gets 5 inches deep. not good for self def. aguilla sss averages 9 inches and people say thats too shallow of a wound. dont trust quikshok for self def. it just doesnt do the job.

I think the Quick-Shok would best be used on Crows(Due to Rapid Expansion),
however I don't know the results with the Velocitors(yet:evil: ). I would like
to find a suitable round for slightly tougher game animals like woodchucks or
other heavy small game or varmits 5-10+lbs. I belive that 1 rifle with a few
load options while in the feild(yes I know the 30-06 is capable of this task),
however while squirrel or rabbit hunting, sometime's opertunity for other small
game presents itself. The question of the Barnes "load" was to find a bullet
that is less likely to fragment(while still expanding) into lots of test media,
wet paper, sand, water, drywall and wood. It is very rare for a lead bullet to
stay intact in almost any of these media(except of course water), even the
copper plated hollow points.

Reading the above brought two different points to mind.

First, the hyper velocity loads seem impressive on paper, but the accuracy is seldom as good as high velocity long rifle loads.

Second, the standard high velocity long rifle load is more than adequate, as long as you are not asking it to perform at 100 yards. I watched my father kill deer at 35 to 50 yards with a single Remington 22 long rifle hollow point to the heart. It penetrated all of the muscle and still managed to do enough damage to the heart that the deer either dropped where they stood, or only ran 50 or so feet. To a point, bullet placement is more important than speed. A near miss kills nothing.

Aguila supermaxium 30 grain hollow point muzzle velocity(1,750) muzzle energy(204 lbs)

Try this round out it's fast & accurate, and hardly ever misfires, even while speed shooting.

Those Aguila Supermax's are pretty stout. I have shot them out of my 617. When I shoot them if you didnt know you would think I was shooting a 686 with 38's. I haven't tried them out of a rifle.

So many questions, so little time.

I was imagining a 1500+fps round with about 40 grains of
weight.
That is simply not possible with a .22LR. You are in .22 WRM territory there.

1. Barnes Triple-Shock .223 bullets currently sell for about .50 cents apiece. Just for the bullets used for reloading.
Loaded .22LR ammo would easily double that price.
Would you be willing to pay $50.00 for a box of 50 .22 LR cartridges?

2. They wouldn't work anyway at attainable .22LR velocity.
Barnes Triple-Shock big game bullets work so well because they give very deep penetration in big game. (Something not needed, or desirable, for small game hunting.) At attainable .22LR velocity, they would act very much like a FMJ, and just shoot a .22 cal hole through the target.

3. Aguila SS-Sniper 60 grain loads are too long to stabilize in normal .22LR rifling twist.
I have tested them in Winchester, Browning & Ruger rifles, as well as Colt & S&W handguns, and in all cases, they gave terrible accuracy, and often key-hole & tumble at much beyond 25 yards.

4. The .22LR has gained it's reputation as a small game killer over the years more due to it's pin-point accuracy and ease of shooting it accurately, then by bullet performance. If you shoot a rabbit, or a squirrel in the head with one, it will kill it instantly. It matters not one bit if the bullet performs like a .300 Magnum Barnes performs on an elk shot through the shoulders.

5. Probably the best killing small game .22LR load today is the CCI Quick-Shok, or any hollow-Point load.
But the problem with them is, they aren't needed for head shots, and tear up too much meat with body shots.

6. My favorite small game load is any of the standard velocity Match loads. They give exceptional accuracy, and are quieter then Hi-Speed or Hyper-Velocity loads. Often, especially for squirrel hunting, the reduced noise will not scare away other squirrels, and make the likelihood of a full game bag much higher.

For target use and plinking, the Federal bulk packs from Wally World are great, they run good in my 22/45 and are pretty darn accurate, given the price. For premium ammo, I'd go with mini-mags or the quick shock.

Dang!

I hate REVIVED threads! :banghead:

I ain't alert enough to look at the dates I guess!

I was going to say almost exactly what rcmodel said.

I exclusively shoot subsonic ammo through my 22LRs. Of course it isn't a laser beam, but that's what my 22-250 is for. Subsonics are pretty darn quiet, and if you use what your gun likes they will get the job done. This is of course from an accuracy standpoint for hunting small game. If you're going after bigger targets at closer ranges I can see how the faster rounds might be worth it.

I have some of the Aguila supermaximum hyper velocity 30gr hp ammo I will try on squirrels from my Buckmark pistol this year. The 1700plus fps is getting up there where 17m2 flies at. Has anybody chronied it? Can it be that fast?? Could it be undesirable to use such fast ammo in a semiauto rimfire pistol with a light slide weight?

Mach2,

I tried out a few stingers in my buckmark a while back, they seemed OK, but they're not something I would use in it all the time.

As I don't know how much of a battering the light Al alloy frame would take, I would be more than a little ticked off, if I cracked the frame or something silly.

I wouldn't expect to get 22lr rifle hyper velocities from a pistol barrel either. Subsonic, standard velocity with the odd hi velocity round, on occasion, does me just fine for 22lr pistol shooting.

Ok, now that I have done some ammo testing, I think I have figured it out.

1. The Velocitors have very poor accuracy and are very loud (also pricey).

2. The CCI stuff all works pretty well, I like the Stingers the best for 50+ yrds.

3. The CCI Subsonics will be my first choice for Squirrels under 50 yrds.

4. At $7.50 for a box of 550, the Federal HP's are the best all purpose load.

And last, the Quick Shoks kill crows dead :D

I think I was expecting a little too much out of my LR. Mabe that is why guns are availible in so many offerings. Thanks for all the positive feedback.

I really like the Win Super X 40gr plated HP in the 100 round boxes.

Few of my .22's shoot the hyper-speed stuff very accurately.

For plinking, the bulk Win 333 is hard to beat.
