I have owned 3 M77's the 1st was a wood stocked .270. I shot it a great deal and it was a dream to shoot. Was capable of shooting sub 1 MOA with good factory ammo and decent conditions. Took many deer with it and was absolutely stupid to have let it go. (Long story involving a cracked scope case and a missed buck). But still was the best shooting rifle I have ever owned. The guy I bought it from had a replaced the trigger, but was stock other than that.
Next I had a wood stocked 30-06, shot very well, had the original trigger but it was pretty decent. Had a few sub MOA groups but was what I considered a 1.5-2 MOA rifle.
The last was a Stainless all weather .243. Nice gun, shot it only sparingly but the few times I sat down at the shooting bench, was close to 1 MOA, but I never played with my ammo choices so I feel that it could have been. My dad loved the rifle so I let him have it. He still has it, better than 10 years later.
I have several friends who shoot them and are Ruger only rifle guys. They are beautiful rifles, and in my experience are every bit as good as Remington at least as far as your stock rifles go. I am NOT a competitive bench guy and don't know about tricking them out as compared to the Remington, but I do like the feel of Rugers better both the stock, and the action. That said I don't own one right now, I am shooting my Browning BLR or my ole 1903 so go figure!
