The ups and downs of Ruger 77s????

I have owned 3 M77's the 1st was a wood stocked .270. I shot it a great deal and it was a dream to shoot. Was capable of shooting sub 1 MOA with good factory ammo and decent conditions. Took many deer with it and was absolutely stupid to have let it go. (Long story involving a cracked scope case and a missed buck). But still was the best shooting rifle I have ever owned. The guy I bought it from had a replaced the trigger, but was stock other than that.

Next I had a wood stocked 30-06, shot very well, had the original trigger but it was pretty decent. Had a few sub MOA groups but was what I considered a 1.5-2 MOA rifle.

The last was a Stainless all weather .243. Nice gun, shot it only sparingly but the few times I sat down at the shooting bench, was close to 1 MOA, but I never played with my ammo choices so I feel that it could have been. My dad loved the rifle so I let him have it. He still has it, better than 10 years later.

I have several friends who shoot them and are Ruger only rifle guys. They are beautiful rifles, and in my experience are every bit as good as Remington at least as far as your stock rifles go. I am NOT a competitive bench guy and don't know about tricking them out as compared to the Remington, but I do like the feel of Rugers better both the stock, and the action. That said I don't own one right now, I am shooting my Browning BLR or my ole 1903 so go figure!

Reyn, NICE DEER! What's the spread? Looks HUGE in the pic, WAY outside the ears. I'm jealous.

Thanks, the pic makes it look a little bigger i think. It's 20in wide at the wide point. What makes it stand out in person is how thick the base tines are. Its thick all the way through.

I have 2 M77's, a 243 and a 7x57. The 243 shoots most anything to 1" or less at 100 yards. The 7x57 likes 154 grain and up.

Late model Ruger M77 barrels are fine. The bedding is awful. I had to "glassbed" my 308 with Marine Tex to get the best accuracy. The first targets I shot were about 1.25 MOA, but as more rounds went down the barrel, the bedding and accuracy just got worse.

I have attached a picture of an early target. I shot this on the bench, you can see the side to side movement of rounds. I believe this was due to the action sliding around in the stock.

That last target was shot the weekend after the rifle was bedded, and it was shot prone with a sling. Much better group even though I was unsupported.
