If I had to have a .30 cal magnum, I'd go with the Win Mag just because things are more common for it, but not a lot wrong with the old H and H. Little more than I need and in that game class I prefer the 7mm Rem Mag, but hey, I'm not gonna argue on nuance. I just really don't need a long action belted magnum for much, but that don't keep me from owning the 7 and I ain't lookin' to sell it. The .308 is perhaps the best deer/hog caliber ever created..
..and it's all I need around here. Just how dead can ya kill 'em, anyway? I really like the M7, though, fantastic, light, handy hunting rifle that's amazingly accurate and it suitable for brush hunting or canyon spot and stalk. Big magnums tend to be bulky, cumbersome, and heavy.
I could go with a .30-06, but I fail to see where it'd do anything more than my little M7 and I can't get a M7 in .30-06, being a short action gun. The .308 will kill anything the .30-06 will kill, though, and just as dead. I like the fact that I can come into surplus brass cheap from time to time, too.
The .30-06 WAS a military round. The .308 still IS a military round and those miniguns spit out a LOT of brass a guy like me could use. I like to run down to the range when the coasties qualify with that M60, too, brass everywhere.
