There is no ammo shortage at Gander Mountain at 1960 and 290 in Houston. I was there today and they have mass quantities of all popular calibers..... 9mm, .40, .45, 7.62 X 39, .223, 7.62 X 54 and lots more.....and multiple brands of everything too. Maybe they had it in stock because the prices were too high, but it is in stock at least.....

I actually came home with a pmag too.....

Have some here in Michigan, too... the prices are very high... 39.99 for a box of Black Hills Blue Box, 52gr... (.223)... incredibly high prices. :(

The gander mountain near me always has ammo, just not the right price. I don't mean to say that the prices are just a few dollars more, I mean $42.99 for a box of .308 rem core-lokt or $38.99 for .30-30 core-lokt.

The prices are outrageous. It's amazing they haven't run out of business.

Yeah, not where I am either.

I called every sporting goods and gun store in town trying to find some .380 ammo or .22lr wildcats. The shelves were bare.

This wave of walmart shortages does show the value of having a few overpriced retailers in the area... by leaving their prices high they discourage "buy everything" hoarding and that could save you (or rescue your hunt) if you happen to run out of whatever you need while all the walmarts and other discounters are bareshelved.

Ain't capitalism great?! :D

There is no ammo shortage........ there are a few boxes of skeet loads at most of the local gun shops.

As far as affordable ammo goes, HUGE shortage.

I stopped at a local gunshop to see what's up and bought the last box of .380acp blazer for $20.00 out the door.
6 weeks ago they had plenty of .380acp magtech @ $19.99 a box and that was too high for me.

I never thought I'd pay $20. for blazer but that was cheaper than the Buffalo Bullet at $27. for 20 and he doubts they can get any .380 in the future.

Saw an ad for Gander, Way high prices, they can keep it and I threw the add in the trash. Won't be buying anything there. Need everyone to do the same.

Maybe Gander Mountain has ammo in stock right now but trying to get it through the distrduters is pretty much a hit and miss proposition, sort of like buying a Harley Davidson motorcycle twenty years ago.

The distributers call us up and ask if we want so and so ammunition, if the shop says no, we may not get another opportunity for two to three months.

Trying to get anything from Winchester and Remington right now is near impossible with three to five month backorders being the norm.

Walmart prices are hard to beat but they're kind of like $2.00 gasoline. It seems like a deal after $4/gallon but in reality it's still too dang high.

The local Wal-Mart got on today's truck some .45 and some .40. Of course, it was gone almost instantaneously.

Here's what they've resorted to doing:

Went on an ammo hunt over the weekend...

Some buddies and I hit every gun shop within 30 miles over the weekend in search of ammo and reloading components. I was able to find almost everything I was after (although some of it at outrageous prices that I will not pay) except for small rifle primers.

I've noticed 12ga shells are $10+/box just about everywhere. I found some at Ace hardware today for $5.88 and thought it was a deal. Sad, sad, times.

I found large pistol primers at a local gun shop where they were mislabeled for a decent price (register wanted an extra dollar/box). They had 11 boxes and I bought 10, meeting my requirements (I shoot a lot of 45 ACP) and leaving the other box for the next guy. I felt kinda bad about buying most of their stock, since these have been hard to find lately, but I've been looking for this quantity for awhile and I have to look out for myself first.

Bullets are out there, though often only the most expensive brands are in stock.

I think it's getting better, and plan to just keep looking until I find everything on my shopping list. I will not pay inflated prices or purchase unnecessary amounts of ammo/components to stock up because I'm afraid of Obama.

That's a great analogy. If one gas station was charging $4 a gallon and the one across the street was charging $2 a gallon, but was out of gas, I might say, "I can't find gas!" I would keep an eye on that gas station and be sure to fill up when they did have gas. Same with Wal-Mart.

I visited a Cabela's store in the Midwest this weekend.

They had a good supply of .223, including brass cased Hornady 55 gr FMJ. Nice looking ammo. About $0.55 / round in boxes of 50. It was selling at that price.

They had good quantities of .40 and .45 FMJ, selling fast.

Very little 9mm -- only some boxes of expensive JHPs.

.308 Winchester? -- yes; hunting/match loads for at least $1.00 per round.

A bit of brass-cased 7.62x39 at, IIRC, $0.50 / round. No Wolf or anything like that.

Interestingly, they were virtually swept clean of .30-30 Winchester! Three or four boxes of expensive hunting loads were all. (They were sold out of the superb 160 gr LeverEvolution load.)

ASIDE: One might not have predicted good old .30-30 would be caught up in the Great Obama Ammo Buy, but I think it has, to a degree. The more affordable .30-30 factory rounds, like the Federal Hi-Shok 150 / 170 gr SPs ($12 to $13 / 20), are hard to find, and sell out fast. Lesson? Not everyone keeps an AR or M1A for SHTF! I figure a lot of people out there must rely on a .30-30 levergun as their preparedness rifle, and we're seeing a reflection of that. ...

Anyway, this Cabela's had a nice selection of .22 LR ammo, including the Federal Champion bulk packs, Winchester Wildcat bulk packs, CCI Mini-Mags, many others.

12 ga shotshells out the wazoo. Bulk, magnums, whatever. I didn't check prices.

All the .243, 7mm, .300 WSM, etc., you could want.

Just one piece of data from one place and time.

well, 100 rds of 9mm WWB now still cost about the same before this ammo fiasco going on. I cleaned the shelf last week with 11 boxes of those because i am tired of looking for cheap 9mms. Academy has monarch but charges at least 2 bucks more if i were to get 2 50 rd pack.

100 rd WWB = 18.95
divide that by 2 = 9.47/ 50 rds
monarch at academy = 10.49/ 50 rd

edit: i got the WWB at wal mart

Not me......
Saturday I just picked the box of ammo up off my front porch after the FEDEX driver set it down. ;)
I've had it with searching for ammo. I back-order it and then just relax while it comes to me.

*Holds up hand on the Cabelas Ammuntion in the 45 ACP. I bought a bunch online when one saturday night the link to a particular ammo became active changing from "Out of stock" to "Order quanity?"

Yipee Ching!!!! Clicked 6 months worth on sight.

Hard to beat a click online when you are limited by traffic and how little gasoline or desiel is left in your tank.

I've stopped buying retail, if the number next to the amount of ammo is not 1000 then I don't buy it. I reload like a fiend now and am glad I got 5000 batches of primers when I did because the local guys stopped selling them in store and went straight to ammo(probably figured there'd be more money to make). If I can't beat retail previous the election by a few bucks then I don't get it (yeah I actually have a list compiled). The only ammo I'm laying out extra for is 8mm and 7.62x54r because it's still cheaper. I've got well over a k of factory .308 Win and I'm not shooting it till his 'panic' subsides which bites because I've got two CETMEs and I'm almost done with my latest South African FAL kit build. I got 2k of .223 for just at thirty cents a round and enough components to reload another few thousand, so I'm shooting anything I can't get at Walmart for 50 cents a round or cheaper. I'm hanging up almost all my 'modern' guns and going to surplus, going to learn to love the 7.62x54r.

I'm wondering if a bunch of us contacted the primer makers and did a 'group buy' of 50,000 or primers (each getting a 5,000 primer lot) if we couldn't work something out with the manufacturer. I think maybe we should ask thehighroad about having a group buy section, a couple of the homebrew forums have them and that how I got what I needed to finish my PPSH 43 without going broke. Heck if a hundred of us contacted Winchester together and asked nicely to purchase 100k of rounds altogether I'm sure they would consider doing business. PM me if you want, I'd love to get that rolling.

You hit the nail on the head. I have two 30-30s and trust them completely. I don't know when it became necesary for a rifle to have a 20-30 round magazine and fire as fast as you could pull the trigger for it to be a good self defense gun. It is sure not needed for a hunting rifle.

A big plus to me with a lever action is that you don't have to chase your brass all over the place if you are careful. Also it can handle light loads and max power loads. To me that is a versatility that is good to have.
