Thick recoil pad for AR-15?

PTK - Why are you going to be shooting a .50 standing then kneeling? You can use your gun for whatever, but I assume doing all that you are going to be shooting offhand, with a 30" heavy heavy gun, you will be shooting relatively close targets. If that is case, get a smaller gun for close up, or place your targets far enough out you need to be in a supported shooting position.

Just my .02 cents

In the military we found that an effective muzzle brake is mandatory.
While directing the overpressure to what can be dangerous levels back around the shooter, there is just no other way to keep the recoil reasonable.

I was shooting a .50 BMG top end on an AR lower, and what I had to do was,
1. Effective muzzle brake!
ArmaLite makes one that works well.

2. ADD LEAD TO THE BUTT STOCK!
Adding weight will do wonders for the recoil.

3. Use a slip on butt pad with silicone gel!

4. If you are shooting most of the time from a bench, get a bench hook and tie that rifle down!
Add the mass of the bench to the recoil equation.

5. Some people use 'Lead Sleds', and they work!

CommanderPoopyduX - I'll be starting with the lowest felt recoil position (for me) and gradually working toward the highest (prone).

I am afraid standing and holding an unsupported 50 is going to give you a lot of recoil. I could be wrong, but the ground will at least take some of the blow, as opposed to all of it going into your shoulder and arm, as well as torquing upward. But again, the time I shot a .50, I did so on a bench, so I can't honestly say what shooting one standing up will do.

I'd imagine a .50BMG would be pretty tough to handle standing up regardless of steps taken to reduce recoil.

For less than the cost of one box of ammo, I might as well give it a try.

It looks to me that it is a "slip-over" like the shotgun recoil pads. I wonder if one could cut a couple of those "gellin'" shoe inserts to the size and put those inside instead of this foam that they provide, or with the foam? Perhaps foam/gel/foam/gel?

Just thinking aloud,

Hi Guys,

I thought I'd throw my .002 worth in here since you seem to be discussing my upper.

My brake design is similar to the AR-50(tm) or the Barret 99(tm)

The idea behind a muzzle brake is to dump the gas as fast as possible to reduce the recoil impulse. (think about it... The Paladin howitzer uses a 2 gill brake)

More ports have actually proven much less effective than the 2 gill design I have on the upper. This is because the gas can't all dump in the first port or two and the pressure drops slower. The plus side to a brake with more ports is the muzzle blast is dampened (not attenuated - just not amplified) They ARE quieter that a 2 port brake, but what the hell, we're talking 50's here!

As for the recoil pads.

I offer a custom silicone pad and riser that fits the ACE ARFX stock, and a Custom pad for the Magpul Tactical (replaces the whole back of the stock on the magpul) - I DO plan on doing a A2 Pad that will screw on, but don't have the time right now with all the uppers going out the door.

If you want a decent store bought pad, the best one I have had experience with is the X-coil pad by Tru-glow. You must do some custom fitting with a beltsander or live with an ugly pad, but they work great. I have 2 of these on a couple diffrent 50's and they work great.

Let me know if you guys have any other ????

Thanks
