Thinking about a Baer

Congratulations! I've been loading up a bunch of 155 gr lead swc from a local caster. Have some 200 gr swc and some 230 lead round nose as well . Getting close to being out of brass. I have about 5,000 cases on hand either filled or waiting at any one time. Usually all full by March, and all empty by November.

From all I hear folks love the Monolith.

The difference I have noticed between the PII and the Ed Brown Exec Target is that the Brown feels more "refined", the Baer feels more "substantial". I shoot the Baer better, but may change my mind when the Brown gets the fiber optic front sight. We're not talking about a lot of difference, and the Brown will outshoot the Baer with certain loads. The Baer is tighter, especially the barrel bushing. I've put well over 10,000 rounds through it, maybe closer to 15,000 and there is no way to break it down without the bushing wrench. Fine with me. Hope that is still the case at 50,000.

I've heard the Springfield TRP Pro is a pretty nice gun too .........

The Springfield Custom Shop makes a fine 1911. I have a Custom Carry and I like it almost as much as my Concept II.

Way to go.

I'm envious.

I've been waiting twelve weeks now for my PII in .38 Super. Wait could be up to twenty weeks for a Baer, especially if you have any modifications.

I think it will be worth it.

I really like those esmerelda grips, robctwo.

RobCTWO: Don't mean to hijack the thread, but I noticed you have the fiber optics on one of your 1911s. Do you like those? Would you recommend them over, say, Novak low mounts?
Got some fiber optics on my Ruger .22 and I've yet to warm up to them.

Cardboard Box

It will come in a carboard box. Not that I care but I have noticed another thread with some 4,500+posts about the fact that a $2000 pistol came in a cardboard box.

What would you rather pay for???

The pistol or the box?

I paid for the pistol...but I do still have the cardboard box, it done its job nicely (protected my Stinger during shipping)

The pistol. I don't care about the box. When I did my first post I honestly screwed up. I had noticed this on- going thread title "$3000 Les Bear in a Cardboard box" or something like that. The thread had a ridiculously high post count and I was thinking it was on THR but it was Glocktalk I had seen it on. So my previous post was a joke, but unfortunately the wrong audiance.

It is a great feeling to open the cardboard box! Once you handle and shoot the pistol that comes in the box, you love the box to, for it holds your Baer.

No...I get the joke.

I was just stopping the parade before it started...(people complaining about the box)

I got a good laugh when I read that thread on GlockTalk (about a year ago the first time I seen it I think)

The Bear is an excellant gun.
Did you check out a Dan Wesson CBOB?
You should.

I put the EGW on the .45 Baer after shooting it for a few months. I'm 58, some eye issues, and shoot speed steel quite a bit. The fiber optic really helps me pick up the front sight against the white plates in a hurry. Shooting outside in the summer the front sight just glows. I shot a little USPSA this last summer and the fiber optic works good for that. I shoot bowling pins in an after work league at my club. The fiber optic works great right up until dusk, then I'm just using a dark front post and my shooting drips off. I get accused of cheating with the 1.5" Baer and hand loads using the Hornady HAP 230 gr over a stout load of Universal.

The EGW sight I got had the solid front, which is good for protecting the fiber, but not that great for light transmission, so I am replacing it with a slim Dawson Precision. I have a factory Baer fiber optic on the 9mm PII and like it. I'm putting a Baer fiber optic on the Brown Exec Target. Both Baers and the Brown slide are off getting an Ion Bond finish.

The Esmeraldas are great. I like the full thickness on the 45s and the slim grips on the 9mm.
