Thinking About a Derringer...

I am sort of curious to find all the little hiding spots (on me) where I can carry it!

I use to carry my NAA Mini 22LR in my blue jeans watch pocket.

Be a little cautious about what you shoot with it. The 22 velocity is right slow out of that short barrel. I've had the bullets bounce back at me after failing to penetrate a 55 gallon drum.

Thanks for the heads up - I hadn't thought of that...

mine is a .44 mag Bond derringer. Accurate enough to hit what I want out to quite a distance. Throws a 240gr JSP at 1100 fps. Carries easy.

I think most folks that shoot one, do so as a curiosity and don;t spend any real time getting "good" with one. I have shot hundreds and hundreds of rounds through mine and am completely confident in it.

Most powerful true pocket gun you can buy.

If it makes you feel good carring it, go ahead. Just don't load it. You might shoot yourself..

I've had a few..........

Over the years, because I just like Derringers..........I bought them.
The first was a FIE, .38 Special, many years ago. Well, maybe over 20.
It was chrome plated I think. I could hit a pieplate at 5 yrds. most of the time. The trigger was really bad. I mostly shot Wadcutters in it.
Someone talked me out of it in a trade.

Next I had a couple Davis Derringers, one in .38 Special, one in .22 LR.
DSW still has the .38 Special. Rough, stiff triggers onn both of them.
I traded the .22 LR, to a Son in law, for a .410 shotgun.

Then I found a used Bond Arms Derringer, in .45acp, at a right price.
I bought it. It is different than any other derringer I have seen.
1st, it has a "transfer bar system" for safety. And, a trigger guard for more control.
2nd, the trigger is much better than any other derringer.I can fire it one-handed. I'm 6'1", 225#'s.
3rd, the lock-up is much easier to work. The lever is on the left, instead of the right side. The lock up lever only has to move about 3/8 turn to open it.
Folks, this is Not your grandfathers old Derringer. It's very different.

So, I went out & bought myself another, a new one, in .45Colt/.410.Texas Defender.
It has a trigger guard, for more control
It's heavy, weighs about 22 oz. empty.
At 21', 7 yrds., I hit a silhouette, all the time, at least 7's, with Cowboy .45 loads. The triple-buck load in .410 is a good load at 5 to 7 yrds.

If you like Derringers.........Bond is the Best. If you want it, Buy it!
I don't carry mine much. I drop it in my pocket to go down to the road to get the mail.(I live in the country)

Good decision picking the NAA .22 Mag. I've had one for quite a few years now and love the thing. It is plenty accurate for up close and personal defensive distances; heck, with some practice, you should be able to hit a soda can at a reasonable distance just fine. It makes a nice package. Quite handy and fun to always have around. That .22lr cylinder gets a regular workout of shorts run through it for informal target practice.

Never had a true derringer.

Did have an NAA mini-revolver once in .22lr - the "short" barreled one (1 and 1/8th" - I think the "long" barreled one was 1 and 7/8ths", IIRC). It was well-made, very concealable, and very "cute", but I had trouble hitting a paper plate at THREE yards. Yes, that's correct, it would sometimes MISS a 10" paper plate at THREE yards. Sold it.

I have the Bond with three barrels: 1) the .45 Colt/.410 Snake Charmer IV, 2) .357 Magnum, and 3) .22 LR. I like mine for plinking and for snakes with the .410 barrel set. Just got a Black Racer that was chasing me (talk about unusual) with it. Usually use it on cottonmouths.

The trigger takes some practice as the pull is up as much as to the rear. It is definitely a different feel.

Accuracy is better than I expected. For me, the trigger pull and the short sight radius make it hard for me to be consistent. I get decent groups six-shot (two reloads) at seven yards.
