Thinking about an 1849 Pocket

I'm seriously considering selling my Uberti 2nd model Dragoon to buy an 1849 pocket. I've read what threads there are on the pocket, but has anyone used these a lot and is there a preference between say Cimerron or just any old uberti dealer? I use my guns a lot, and would probably use this not only for a cowboy reenacting hideout gun, but maybe a coat pocket gun around the farm for barn rats and varmits.

Thanks for any opinions you have.

Pocket Colt

I bought an Uberti recently thinking it would be neat to have. Its a PITA in a couple of ways. Balls that fit are hard to get. The .320 are not carried by everyone and even they don't shave lead when loading. They fit tight enough and I use wads so it works out OK. The biggest problem is caps jamming up the action. Those plastic cap keepers help but not a lot. I did some modifications per Mec's advise but haven't gotten out to see how it works. I may just end up buying a conversion cylinder for it.

A friend of mine has a .32 conversion done to a signature series by a good gunsmith, and it is sweet, but I wuz thinking keeping it cap n ball would be cheap to shoot and more powerful and accurate than the remmie pocket. It's good to know you are having problems finding the correct ball size. I had that problem with my uberti .36 Navy and ended up going to Dixie Gun Works for some .380 ones they had. The only place I could find them.

I use O buckshot (.320) in my .31 Baby Dragoon. Those little guns are tough to load due to the short loading lever - I use a piece of copper pipe as a loading lever extender.
Check out Track of the Wolf for .380 roundballs.
 
I have a Uberti 1849 w/o loading lever, marked on the top of the barrel:

ALLEN F.A. MFG. CO. - SANTA FE N.M

I have fitted it with an R&D conversion cylinder. The resulting pistol is the same size as a Ruger Bearcat except that it offers 5 rounds (hammer down on the 6th empty chamber) of .32 S&W instead of 6 rounds (transfer bar) of .22 LR.

Of course the Bearcat can be reloaded much, much quicker, but the 1849 gains style points.
 
.31 or .36

I've shot both 2nd Generation Colt Pocket Models and Uberti Pocket Models for several decades now. I really like the .36 calibre over the .31. All personal preference - but they run about the same cost and the .36 gives you a little more punch. I keep my Colts loaded with 17 grains of triple FFF, .376 round ball with a wonder wad between the powder and ball.

Picture attached. I had pre-ban elephant ivory grips made for my Pocket Police, name engraved on the backstrap and re-plated. I also had an Army style front sight added for a better sight picture.

Here's what you should do.

Keep the Dragoon, AND get the 1849 pocket.

Now, you should also dive into the deep end of the pool. You'll need a lead melter and a mold & handles. I use Lee because I have always used them and working with Lee is simple stuff. You can get a mold to fit AFTER you get the gun as opposed to before, as if you get a gun and a mold too small, it will be no good to you.

Contrary to another post here, I don't think that they are PITA's. A properly sized ball that YOU made really adds to your experience and fun.

I've got a Wells Fargo, and the 1849 pocket Uberti is basically the same except for having a loading lever. I love it. If Illinois ever goes concealed carry, I would seriously consider keeping it in my car - just for the fun of it - and then haul as* away after the fourth shot (keep one chamber empty and the hammer on that).

Yes, keep the Dragoon for fun and get the little pardner for more fun. :D

I agree with keeping the dragoon, but these gas prices are killing my play money, as well as the cost of guns skyrocketing. I might have to sell something else, maybe look around here a while....hum :banghead:
 
The two pocket model 31s Ive used are close range propositions compared to the dragoon. They are often problematic about handling spent caps until you open the clearances up a bit. After that and as long as you don't shove the wedge in too tight, they work very well.
 
'49 Colt Pocket

yea Bud Get a Uberti '49. Mine is as smooth as Butter, no problems at all and a Blast to shoot,,,,,just get the right size ball. Loadin is a little hard with the short rammer....but its a sweetie for sure! well built fits the hand LIKE A GLOVE! No wonder it was Colt's most popular pistol with the most sales!!!

Pick up a baby Remington too while yer at it...they are about 1/3 smaller,,,
very nice also! Then you can migrate over to the true Derringer repros....
on and on and on the story goes.............you'll see...give it TIME ..AND you will see.:what:
 
You might also consider the Pocket Navy or the Pocket Police, same size as the 31s but cut for the 36 caliber ball.

I have and enjoy both but the 36 does hit a bit harder. The 36's are all five shot, I have 31s that are six shot if that makes a difference to you.
 
I have both, the 1849( have 1 Uknown, 3 ASM, 2 UbertI) baby dragoon 6" (.323 RB used in all )is used around the house. The pocket Navy (.380 RB) (1ASM, 1 UBerti)is used when woods walking and squirrel hunting. Everybody loves shooting the 1849's including me, 6" is my favorite. Thanks to MEC for his help as per his book all are a lot more reliable. PeashooterJoe..
 
When you say used around the house, do you mean plinking indoors? Can you shoot BP indoors?

I would eventually want to do that with a pocket gun myself, I just assumed the smoke would be hazardous, or at least a nuisance.

Those were fairly common in the old days. I've always wished replicas were easier to find.
This one has documents that connect it to the Robert E. Lee Family (or seem to.)
