Thinking of a Taurus 605

Send in the bad one? Shame having a defensive revolver that doesn’t function properly.

I'm not going to pay the shipping on a gun that has been messed up since day one. Taurus makes you pay for the shipping after a year.

Brother has a short barrel 605, and I’ve shot it a few times. I like it alot, but these other gentleman aren’t kidding when they say .357 Mag is a handful. God forbid you ever actually have to use it the .357 Mag will deafen you, your assailant (and fry his eyebrows off), and everyone in the gas station.

The single action trigger is quite nice for the price, both my brother and I have hit 100 yard gong with it multiple times.

The double action trigger is long & heavy. I find it difficult to be amazingly accurate when you’re running it for speed. Better get in close when you use it.

$50-70 shipping for a gun that doesn’t function properly is worth it to me. I don’t like guns that aren’t %100. Taurus turnaround time is pretty good fyi. Your property and I respect that.

They aren't overly complicated. I'd take it apart, figure out what the issue it, and would simply fix it myself. They look a lot like Smiths on the inside. It's probably something simple... Then again I like to tinker, and I'd rather fix it myself if it's an easy parts swap or something fix vs going through the trouble and wait to ship the gun out.

Call them and ask for a shipping label.

Last time I did, a few months ago, they sent me a label for the asking, for a 12 year old gun I wasn't the original purchaser of.

I did call, about a year and a half after I got it. They told me I would have to pay shipping.

It was the principal of the thing, gun was practically still new as I had only shot about 30 rounds through it in the year and a half since purchase. The person I spoke with wasn't very friendly or helpful and I have friends who have not had very good results when sending their guns back to Taurus, its very hit or miss with them. I don't like guns that aren't 100% either, which is why it isn't in use anymore.

I like to tinker as well, to an extent. This is the polymer version, doesn't tear down quite the same way as the metal ones. I didn't want to mess it up anymore than it already is so I just kind of put it on the back burner although I don't think its something that would cost a lot to fix, the part probably costs less than the shipping they wanted to charge to be honest. If all else fails, it can be a parts gun for the other one, and I'm good with that.

Excellent point about firing a .357 Magnum without ear protection. it's not like if we're attacked we can ask our attacker to wait while we put on our earmuffs.
It's easy to forget about things like that when thinking about personal protection I don't want to be attacked but I don't want to be permanently deaf either

I once tried shooting shoulder to shoulder with my brother at a singular target. I bailed very quickly as even though I had eye and ear protection there was a physical wave of muzzle blasts hitting me in the face. It was very difficult to focus standing next to that.

But on the positive note the shooter doesn’t catch much of that at all.

All the guys that complain about old Taurus firearms don't consider the advances in metallurgy and especially manufacturing techniques.

Affordable CAD, 5 axis CNC machines and laser quality control have improved products for all manufacturers.

Taurus seems to be serious about moving the perception of their products from junk to quality.

I would not hesitate to purchase a new Taurus.
I have an old Taurus 66. Or well my wife does now since I prefer my automatic but I've never seen any reason not to love that gun. One of the first hand guns I ever bought

I have a 605 that I bought 20+ years ago when I worked at a gun store. I don't recall the exact price, but it was under $200. It is the bobbed hammer DAO ported model. As mentioned above, it is a handful with full power .357's. The recoil however, is pretty much straight back. Not much muzzle flip. Obviously the porting works. I once won the fireball contest one evening at the local outdoor range using .38 +P factory ammo. It is surprisingly accurate for what it is.

I've had my Taurus 605 for more than two years now and have no complaints. I like the factory rubber grips.

I got my 605 Defender 3" S/S this week. Have not had time for the range yet. But it has a good solid build feel to it. The Taurus haters might consider the possibility that they have improved the quality of their products

Wife has an 85 .38 Special and I have the 617, 7 shot .357 Magnum. I like the 617 for the extra rounds and the factory grip feels just a bit better than the 605.

Developed a good 125 JHP SD Gold Dot load for the 617 and it rides in my truck most of the time. Has a bit of snap but to be expected with a 2” revolver.

Neither has given us any issues.

The 605 is a handy J frame size revolver. The steel frame makes it a shoot able weight for 357mag. I would like to add a S&W j frame airweight to my rotation someday just for the weight reduction.
The size makes it easy to carry in a front pocket.

I confess I own a few and intend to keep them. However the build quality is very hit or miss not very impressive to have to take a brand new revolver apart and have to properly fit the hand with a jewelers file so the cylinder will time and rotate properly. And don't tell me about their warranty. This was a brand new gun sent back to them 3 days after I got it and it was returned to me after "repair" still not functioning correctly and this was all within the last 6 months so don't believe that they have stepped up their service.

I never had an issue with any of the 8 Tauruses I've owned from 2012 till this day. The same is almost true goes the 13 S&W handguns I've own (8 semiautos and 5 revolvers). I had issues with a Shield 45 and my new Shield Plus though.

I agree that Taurus spare part availability and their warranty services is trash.

What's odd is that there some gun owners who seem to claim that there's something wrong with almost every other revolver they purchase while others never had even one issue. There was a S&W thread where several members claimed to have purchased a collection of newer model S&W revolvers over the years, and they claim each and every one of them had an issue. I purchased 5 newer S&W revolvers, and they're all perfectly fine. Either I'm the luckiest man in the world, or they're the unluckiest.

SW 686 Quality control slipping? I guess the difference is that gun owners who allegedly received a problematic S&W revolver are STILL willing to pay $900-$1200 to roll the dice on another in the future; however, those same people will hate and swear off Taurus for life if the $200-$400 revolver they receive had similar issues.

I know that it can be hard to accept that a company can/has turned their Quality Control around .
If I buy a $350 Taurus I would think that there Quality should be at a certain level.
If I buy a similar S&W for three times the money it should be 100% trouble free in comparison to the Taurus. So maybe S&W is the company that has a Quality problem???

I love my S&Ws and feel that the should get a premium over Taurus but Taurus is much better than they get credit for.......

I understand the concept of Once Bitten Twice Shy so I never blame anyone who's been burned in the past for no longer doing business with that company.I know guys that to this day won't buy a Dodge or Chrysler product because of the crap that Dodge was putting out in the 1980s

I'm not going to say that all the software and hardware you mentioned improve the end quality, what does is management and employees who make it a priority and Taurus has done that while others are resting on their laurels.
