I have a friend who has chosen to make a career out of law enforcement. He is fixing to gaduate this month from a law enforcement accademy that he is taking at a local college. Afterwards, he'll be submitting applications at various law enforcment agencies. A few of my frinds are going to put it some funds to buy him an Airweight S&W as a BUG. I'd like for us to get him a 642 like mine, but that is a little out of our price range. I'm thinking a 637 or a 37 is feasable for what we have to put into it. If they don't pitch in, I have a hook-up for a new Bersa .380 for 199.00. How does that sound for a graduation present? I'd like to see the look on his face when he gets it.

Robert.

Three problems. First, caliber. Second, the agency will issue a weapon. Third, the agency may not allow BUG. Your friend could use a gift certificate though. There are many things needed besides a firearm or issued items. I suggest Gall's www.galls.com I wish I had friends like you folks.

Yes, find out if his agency even allows a back up weapon. For many years, ours did not. If they do, they may limit caliber, make, model, etc. And while the thought is admirable of getting him such a weapon, is the Bersa the only option? We've shot one or two over the years and I was never particularly thrilled with them. Remember, in this role, that weapon has to work each time, every time....I would try for something chambered in the officers duty round or a minimum of 9 mm

I see your point.

I really didn't take departmental issues in mind when deciding to do this. Even if he couldn't carry it at work, I still think it would be a nice jesture. He really busted his but to get through this accademy over that past six months. I'll look at other options also.

Thanks, Robert.

tssd1236 raises a good point. What if the gun isn't permitted for off duty use by his agency? If your friend already has a gun, buy a case of ammo & dinner instead.
