9mm (thoughts on 40cal)
I am a member on a 1911 forum and I wanted to hear from ppl who may not always deal with 1911s or have different views. I'm really thinking of doing it. I was gonna get a ATI FX45 Commander and Bobtail it since I heard that 3" barrels aren't worth it in .45. Well, I've heard great things about the EMP and am just wondering what you guys think. Is there anything that I need to worry about? 9mm or 40S&W? Anything that needs to be changed out the box? Ammo suggestions?
...
I got a 9mm some 3yrs ago when they first came out in 9mm..
The gun is the same as it came from the factory, wood grips, 3-dot low profile night sights, 3 mags and "lifetime warranty - no questions asked"
I had some FTFC issues in the first 300 rounds (more so with JHP's) and called the factory, the rep then said "let me get you one of our gunny's". He asked what serial number I had and when I told him he said that my gun was in the batch that they had made changes/improvements in the feed ramp angle and tightness of some barrel chambers and that I should send it in, they pay the shipping, and he'd get right on it or, I could try and polish it myself and it should solve my feed problem and it did, as the only on-going complaints were in earlier batch, (2590) or lower, numbered guns than mine (26**) and those newer/higher batch numbered.
I did, used Flitz gun polish, and did the feed ramp, lightly, and the barrel chamber and since then no issues, now thru 7400 rounds (and on 3rd replaced main spring, outer one only) as they need replacement around every 3000 rounds.
The gun's chamber is tight in regards to re-loads (tried once and stuck one) so no more re-loads - but it shoots any new 9mm, WWB, Federal, PMC, Remington with no problems.
In JHP's it likes the 124gr (as do I) as having a short barrel, the heavier, slower rounds can cause a FTFC issue now and then but not so with 115gr or 124gr and with the short 3"bull barrels, getting the spin-up within the barrel via higher velocity does make for the guns on-going accuracy, thus my first choice is 124gr JHP's, the best of both worlds, - weight and just enough velocity, to match the_same_feel as all those 115gr or 124gr FMJ for range time. 134gr was hit and miss and 147gr JHP's are out of the question.
It goes, an easy 1000 round before tear-downs, using gun grease on the rails and guides and can be shot one handed, weak handed, without issues which is a very "high criteria" in a gun for me, in that they must be "forgiving"..
I think the total of inquiries about my 9mm/the gun itself have proved out for around 8 buyers/owners with total satisfaction and all agree with me that they are a balanced, fall back down on-target, point and shoot, guns.. Namely, little tack drivers..
Only one person chose to go with the 40cal and at first loved it but within 3 months sold it because of its snappier recoil and he could not get the_feel for fast follow-up shots along with one hand accuracy.. That was just over a year ago and just last week I got a PM from him saying his NIB EMP 9mm is/was one week away and he was excited to say the least..
My 9mm remains my range favorite and it always gets the nods of those that see it or those I let fire it, especially the girls and my wife..
I have three forty's, I love, 2 in Sig P229n/r and a Beretta Px4 40 (with *rotating barrel) and those guns, because of their mid size *build, weight, offer the_balance and accuracy with quick follow-up shots or one handed shots and as I told my friend, "In IMO the EMP/40 may be a handful, far less forgiving than the 9mm, and that turned out true for him and the change, back, to the more forgiving 9mm EMP.. 9+1
A light mention, literally IMO, of great, comfy, all day, ccw
Hope this helps
