This is why pistol grips on a shotgun don't work...

moron
n. A person whose IQ lies between 45 and 59. Slightly stupider than a retard (60-69) but still smarter than an idiot (below 45).

I busted my lip with a mossy 500 PGO not too long ago by aiming it in front of my face. I knew they weren't suppose to be fired that way, but I couldn't hit anything at the distances I was shooting at from the hip or chest.

Birdshot was manageable, but the last time I shot a 3" shell was the last time I shot it before I sold it.

I'd still own a PGO if I ever become obscenely wealthy, just because they look cool, and would still be alright for SD in a cramped space, but the brutality of shooting one gets real old real quick.

<I love my 12 gauge "pistol". I just cannot understand why people try to shoot these things from anywhere but the hip. >

Even from the hip you have to hold onto them. I saw a guy smash his mouth from the hip. It was the barrel that hit his mouth and The gun landed next to him.

I have shot my 870 as a PGO aiming it (further out than that guy though) with buck and slugs. This is before I discovered THR, but I thought to myself "this is stupid, if I have to hold it out like that I might as well have a full stock and have better control". It now does.

Pistol grips on a shotgun work fine, the moron pulling the trigger in that video could use some work though
+1
Holding it right next to his face was more to blame than the evil pistol grip.

These are good but nothing beats real-life for me...

Once, while at the range, I happened to see a punk kid (20ish, scrawny in a leather overcoat on a hot TX July day) shoot a pistol grip 18" barrel 12 gauge loaded with slugs at the pistol targets.

Gansta style.

You heard me.

No, I'm not kidding.

One shot reduced him to puddle of tears and screaming like a baby as he clutched his now broken wrist and danced the agony dance in circles. Luckily, the gun was pump model, so it didn't go off or anything when he dropped it.

He left it there as he walked, crying, to his car.
His girlfriend picked it up, and as she walked after him, I heard her mutter, "I am SO done with you..."

Nothing beats real life drama.

Or from my perspective, comedy.

:)

Bingo. Shot plenty of rounds from pistol-grip shotguns. I don't shoot from the hip. Still got all my teeth.

Yeah, I'm not sure what the problem is. I've shot a fair number of full power slugs (albeit not 3") from an AOW shottie, using a red dot scope, and haven't had a problem. Just a sore hand before I got a Pachmayr grip. Of course, the vertical foregrip helps a bit.

It's not a matter of upper body strength, either. I can't even do 2 chin-ups.

Just hold the gun tight, push forward with your strong hand, and lightly pull back with the support hand. From what I've heard, some people tend to instinctively pull their hands apart (I guess like they're pulling an imaginary stock into their shoulder?). I could see where that would be a disaster.

Good grief, one idiot that doesn't know how to handle his rig and it's now mass hysteria.

I have shot mine with 3" slugs & 00 shot, shot clays with it by the case and have never hit myself in the face with it.
I have even "gasp" shot it one handed.

RyanM, that VFG looks great. If I may ask, who makes it? I am thinking about a PG shotty for a two-week mountain bike trip in Alaska this summer, and this might be just the ticket.

Unfortunately, the foregrip on mine is sort of a custom item, only readily available on the Serbu Super Shorty (which is what my shotgun is). http://www.serbu.com/top/superShorty.php

You could try e-mailing Mark Serbu at [email protected] about whether you can buy one without the gun, but he's pretty busy and it could be weeks before he responds.

It definitely is the best foregrip for a PGO shotgun though. It puts your support hand about 4" further back than a standard grip, allowing you to hold the shotgun that much further away from your face.

Of course, you could also just buy a Super Shorty, if you don't mind paying a lot more than a standard shotgun (they're worth the money!). I personally wouldn't want to tote around something much larger or heavier on a mountain bike. Serbus are very popular guns, so most Class III dealers usually have one or two in stock.

I never had a problem with my 870 with a PG on it.. I had it down to a science with a single point sling and everything. All I did was aimed fire. I nearly caught my chin the first time I shot it, but I knew that was gunna happen, you know, because the 12ga has a bit of recoil and all, and was prepared with a dual deathgrip on forend and pistolgrip as well as a bit of skill I picked up from the M44..

That is, when your shoulder is feeling a bit blue but you still have 300rds left, push forward at the moment of detonation to negate the recoil. Not so great with the m44, but with the 12ga beer cans in the air are easy game.

Isn't technology great!
Without streaming video, we could only have "heard about" the dumbass who was kissing the shotgun when he pulled the trigger.
It kissed him right back too!

Okay, maybe I'm stupid, but I couldn't find any shotgun video at that site.

:neener:

That guy was an idiot. Fortunately, such people seldom live long enough to procreate.
