So I've always been a high-tech guy. The latest/coolest/most dramatic piece of machinery, whether mobile phone, motorcycle or handgun was the thing I chose to value and more times than not, to own.
So for years I've been focused on semi's as the handgun of choice. Slim, designed to carry IWB and OWB, large round count, and so on.
But years of reading these forums, the the ongoing comments about skilling and drilling for all of the scenarios in which a semi will fail had me thinking. Am I really someone who will be able to afford the time to practice enough to be fully fluent in tap/rack/bang and all it's brethren? Is there much I have in common with a real 'operator'? Um, no, not likely.
And then there's round count. A compelling differentiator versus a revolver until I woke up to realize that I'm in CA and the round count thing, for magazines and the like is not likely to improve. Ten in the mag and maybe one in the chamber is the law. Like it or not.
So would an 8 round or even 6 round reliable and easy to manager revolver be such a bad scenario? For HD at least? I think not. And might it be nice to own something that can be used to defend against most of the largest 4-legged critters while spending time in the woods here in North America? Of course.
So here's my latest acquisition: a S&W Performance Center 6 round counterweighted and muzzle ported 629 V Comp. Surely if Darth Vader rode in the Wild West, I swear he'd have one of these. Would I like a bigger round count? You bet.
Now where can I find his littler brother?? Hmmm...
Comments and guidance welcomed.

Little brother? Perhaps not but how about a slimmed down one? Definitely from the same family. Here's a Performance Center 629 Carry Comp with fixed sights and a factory Power Ported 3 1/8" heavy barrel. To give it some scale, I've included another S&W family member, in this case a J frame model 63 .22LR with adjustable sights. Great to be in the family.

This family even has triplets.

Very Nice gun, I have been waiting for one to come available locally as i would like to try one myself. 44mag is not my favorite round but in a V-comp I am sure I would like it more.

Looking forward to your range report on the 629 V-comp

Its little brother is my favorite shooter with 8 rounds it is very formidable. But I must say my R8 is growing on me as well.

Ahh, that V comp of yours is a beauty. That might be just the model that I'll be searching for. Something about the V Comp design and the 8 shot capacity... What can you tell me/us about it? How does it shoot?
Thx,
B

8 rounds

If I recall the 8 shot N frame was developed to supply entry teams with a weapon to use with a shield.
One handed operation with a quick follow up in case of a misfire.
Please correct me if I am wrong here.
The addition of the rail and options there for LE on some is pretty clear.
Another question I have is are there some more traditional N frame 8 rounders?
The slab sided space age ones just do not float me boat.

Just an old photo of wheel guns. A colt snuck in there somehow.

Well all I can tell you is it is a great shooter that is much more accurate than I am, I got the D/A trigger at about 6 pounds or slightly more and have to use Federal primers for reliable ignition. The 8 shots seem to have a short trigger pull as the cylinder is not rotating very far. I didn't care for the looks of it or the M&P R8 but after shooting them you quickly change your view of them. If you can find a prelock V-comp buy it you won't be sorry!!
