The early part of deer season began with REALLY windy weather. In my area when the wind blows hard (north of 15 MPH is hard around here) then you just won't be seeing any deer until it dies down. If it takes three days, so be it…you won't see any deer until it stops.

So after the wind died down we got an ice storm that brought really cold temps and more wind.

Now it's a few days before Christmas and it's 70 degrees, the weekend starts tomorrow and the forecast is for 20 to 40 MPH winds and up to two inches of rain.

Can I get a break? What the heck?

How is everyone else's season going? Surely someone has to have optimal conditions this year.

Windy days can produce. Get on your feet and stalk bedding areas, Dunno where you are, but Still hunting and glassing whether in timber or open terrian can produce.

I'm in the northern part of MS. I love to stalk but can only do it well after a rain. This is basically all forested hills and you sound like a bowl of rice krispies every time you take a step due to the millions of dried leaves on the ground.

I thought about getting out tomorrow after the rain quits but I really don't think I want to be in the woods with 20 to 40 MPH winds…sounds like a great way to get crushed. :what:

They have to eat some time. They'll move in the wind, just not that far. Yes they may hunker down if it's just one day of high wind, but if it's like you say then it's been nasty for weeks at a time. Either they didn't move and they're all dead from starvation or dehydration, or you just need to figure out where they're hiding from the wind and hunt there.
Trust me, I understand your frustration because the weather can be bad to us at times, but they're still out there somewhere. Be encouraged and get back after them.

When I was doing a lot of bow hunting in NY I exclusively hunted from a tree stand in a patch of old oaks that produced a lot of acorns. On a normal no wind day I would see 10-12 deer feeding on acorns, in daylight. When the wind kicked up and the woods where full of the noise of breaking tree branches I would see zero deer.
I think they didn't like the noise because it would mask the sound of approaching
danger and what they would do is switch to night time feeding in open fields.

Me too,

it is sunny and clear outside, the temperature today is 90F, the swimming pool is at 80F. About to throw the switch on the BBQ. Oh, and the most importabt temperature ..... the beer is at 35F.

Sorry boys, simply could not resist:D.

They will have to move sooner or later, patients my friend, it will get better.
Here this morning in south Texas it's 70 with very little wind but it is supposed to pick up and a cold front tonight. Temps supposed to go into the 20's and that is cold for us.

Saw quite a few yearlings this morning but nothing worth giving a second glance. I did shoot this nice sow right at daylight.

Ouch. Not cool bro...not cool.

Most of the fall has been very nice, warm and dry, but during last few weeks mid 30°F's temperatures, rain and winds up to 50mph+ have been the norm. Strange... last year we had well over a foot of snow in December.

Today it's been calm, but it's still raining. If it doesn't get any better I'll pack my family in minivan and drive up north after Christmas, for lots and lots of snow, a few days of skiing and some moose hunting while I'm at it... :)

THAT sounds like a solid plan!

my seasons over already but....
it started out normal, about 65-70 degree days starting otober 10th as it does every year.

then it got really freaking cold... well for here anyway but without any snow to show for it, just frozen ground and nowhere to get a decent foothold on hillsides.

then it warmed back up for a week into the low 50s and...

yesterday we got 4 inches of snow... I hope it hangs around for just 4 more days... but with my luck it'll be 70 tomorrow and all melt away and then christmas will just be cold and snowless like it always is...

I live North of Denver, we're getting some snow right now, guess the White Christmas tunes will be playing shortly……… ya'll have a Merry Christmas and be safe!

It was in the low 80s today for the first day of Winter. 10 mph east wind. Over the years I have found that an east wind produces poor hunting and lousy scent conditions for dogs.

Besides, it's too hot to hunt.
