Flatiron252: You don't need to apologize for being new here (not even at the AKfiles...). That is very interesting.

Aren't one or two lady "Soviet" snipers depicted in the movie about Stalingrad, "Enemy at the Gates" ?

This concept shouldn't surprise anybody. A squadron of women also flew either the IL-2 aircraft (23 mm, forward guns) against German tanks, at night. IIRC ---
Germans called them, whatever their aircraft and missions, "the Night Witches".

It is a fascinating story, and the Russian propaganda machine made maximum use of it. As many other former combatants, she went through hard times and died too young.

A couple suggestions as you get a feel for the forum: simply posting a link to a news article without further discussion is generally discouraged, although it can be useful if it links to current events or a specific topic of discussion. Number two is a request to put the subject matter of your thread in the title so those interested can tune in and those who are not can skip without clicking on the thread.

It is good that you are getting involved, and this is not intended as criticism. We have members that have been around for quite awhile who occasionally forget, and I have as well. We all probably need to review the THR primer once in awhile for a refresher course.

And another tip for a newcomer, if mods don't object to my borderline "armchair moderating", is to use the forum search function to discover if your topic has already been covered, as it has.

Welcome to the board, and looking forward to your posts. :)

Pretty good article about Pavlichenko. There’s also a decent movie about her, ‘Battle for Sevastopol’. She and Eleanor Roosevelt got along well. IIRC they went shooting together while Pavlichenko was touring the US.

Whether the Soviets enhanced her statistics for propaganda purposes doesn’t matter, she was very good.

Women in the military is a complicated subject, but she and the Night Witches in their Po-2 biplanes showed that, in the right job, they can be as effective as any man.
