I am drooling over these two bp pistols :D they look cute and I plan on buyin one in the near future as I am in the middle of building a 350 chevy for my old 1977 chevy scottsdale. the vest pocket derringer in 31c looks cool it was what the riverboat gamblers carried and the NAA super companion looks like fun! so which one to get? maybe both, thoughts, experiences etc? ;)

While the .31 vest derringer looks cool, I would rather get the NAA cap and ball. More shooting before reloading, can be converted to .22 LR, can use any of the NAA grips including the one that folds and turns into a de facto holster with a pocket clip.

I was planning on getting a Companion, but changed my mind and decided I still wanted something small, but more of a historically classic gun like a .31 revolver.

Now I want a .36 Remington Pocket Police, sadly neither Pietta or Uberti make a replica of them.

I sometimes carry a Remington.41 rim fire derringer. It will barely go through a 3/4 pine board and my ammunition supply is limited.
These are "across the card table guns"! What is the adage 2 feet, 2 shots, and 2 seconds is all you have.then this or one of my other 2 derringers will do.

Didn't the military consider 1" penetration through pine was necessary to be considered deadly enough?

I want a NAA cap and ball.

But I thought it couldn't be converted. Is that just what they are required to say?

uhh...

pretty much.

I also am not sure of the quality of the conversion or the sensibility. It takes long enough to reload a regular NAA, then add four or 5 of the removable firing pins and you've got the recipe for a small, essential part that's easy to lose. Plus, the total cost will be somewhere along the lines of $400.

You used to be able to drop a rimfire cylinder in. But the Feds didn't like this and had them fix it to where it doesn't readily convert.

Now, for the time being, you can purchase a cylinder that takes LR for the magnum frame. BP NAA revolver. Each chamber allows one to drop a plain jane old .22LR in and then a small disk with a nub or pin to act as a firing pin is dropped pin down in each chamber. These disc sort of resemble the plugs used for .22LR to .223 shell shrinkers type cartridges.

I do not know how well they work, but they do sell them.

I wonder if they sell spare firing pin disks for when those teenie tiny pieces get lost?

Is it normal for North American Arms to run out of these?

I tried to order and I was told they were out of both cap and ball models until sometime next year but she didn't know when.

Yes, it is normal for the cap and ball revolvers. I've seen them sold out before and usually get more in stock within a few weeks.

NAA doesn't sell the cap and balls directly, but there are several websites that do sell them. Gunbuyer ships them for free since they cost more than $199. Currently, they are out of all the black powder NAA revolvers.

I would note that James B. Hickok was packing a S&W .32 on his final day in Deadwood City....

Modern thinking is that neither (.31 or .22) caliber is a "fight stopper", unless you score a head shot. The .22 NAA gives you five chances.

I actually have two of the Super Companions, with two spare cylinders, and I bought a .22 reloading set-up just to get the .22 round nose mold. I REALLY like the little stainless NAA revolvers.

People in Hickok's day were afraid of dieing from infection caused by those little 32s and that fear stopped a lot of shootings before they could happen. Now days it is common to hear of dopers taking 10+ rounds of 9mm or 40mm and still coming on. I have a few of them(32s) and like them a lot, But, I sure wouldn't count on any one of them or any 22 black powder to save my life in todays environment. Carry what you want though, it is your right.
