what’s a boolits? I hear this term all the time

Yep, cast lead bullets. I believe the term was coined on CastBoolits forum.

It's used prolifically on that forum, and 'jacketed' is a word that cannot be spoken or typed. 'J-word' is the official substitute.

I'm on that forum,and this one. The only 2 I will spend any time with.

I like hard cast alot... way underrated in the big bore guns!

I'm still a lurker on CastBoolits. I don't know enough to contribute and haven't cast my own in at least 25 years.

I don’t mind trolls, as they are pretty easy to spot and easy to dismiss. Sometimes they’re funny too, so they don’t bug me.

even if you take trolls out of the equation; this site has a depth and breadth of knowledge that pretty much stands alone.

I began the process of hand loading in 2012 by reading everything I could get my hands on.
The archives here were indispensable, and as valuable as any book I have at home.

What is a troll in this context? Someone who doesn’t contribute substance or only argues or what exactly? Seems to me, this forum doesn’t really have those. I’m thinking it’s because we have diligent moderators which chases them away?

a troll is people you don’t like... don’t like someone, they are a troll to you.

It’s just the internet, it should be free and expressive

Hard to define... like pornography or art, I know what it is when I see it.

the mods here do a good job of eliminating the bridges that trolls hide under.

Most reloaders are careful and responsible, so it make sense that the crowd here is squared away.
There are old reloaders and there are careless reloaders, but there are no old careless reloaders.

I'm now one of the old ones.....I have a saying. I will self load until I die or become dangerous.....which ever comes first. I am getting slower....as you get older you don't process things as fast.....so slow down or get dangerous.

I used to be watching most of the gun forums....now I'm down to THR and Cast Boolits......mostly their special projects, since I started 3D printing. Maybe THR will add such a section someday......

As was hinted in the last post....moderators make the biggest difference. THR reloading has the best one. Cast Boolits moderating in special projects (Making Bullet Feeders), stays out of the way. He can because there is zero trolling there. Just teachers and students. (organized like an archive....one never ending thread, where the latest is like page 100 and something.)

Not saying this applies to you, but we often don’t know we’re getting too old or too cognitively impaired until someone tells us or, worse, it’s too late.

I bought some reloading stuff from an old guy last summer who was quitting the hobby. He said he was too old.

Thought I had a gold mine in primers, but when I looked at them they were all mixedup between rifle and pistol in same sleeves. How did I know? They were Winchester which are red for pistol and green for rifle. Even if I’m wrong on this last sentence, I passed on all primers and only bought unopened powder, brass, and bullets.

Full disclosure: I’m 69 so no spring chicken.

Well, after a lifetime of shooting sports (since Boy Scouts) and these habitual ammo shortages (natural or otherwise), my New Year's resolution for 2021 was to start my path to reloading. We'll see how it goes - but at least I'm out of the starting gate.

To date I have:
1. Signed up for the NRA Basic Metallic Cartridge Reloading Course (12 Jun 2021)
2. Joined THR & NES.
3. Ordered the Hornady Lock-n-Load AP set, dies, shell plate, M2 scale, and supplies to start with 9mm, (Most of the supplies will take a while, so I won't do anything stupid until at least AFTER the class)
4. Presently carving out a space in the basement for a dedicated bench.

If I'm missing anything - let me know.

P.S. - On the bullet casting: when I was 16, I was casting 58 cal minie's for a Zouave carbine (percusion) that my dad got for me. They were crude, but fix the spru and grease them up, and they always worked fine. I hunted with that for many years - probably shot more Whitetail with that then I ever could have with a shotgun. Aside that - I know virtually nothing about casting "real" bullets.

"a shellplate" you said, so assuming you are going to reload for your competition pistol.....If you expand to many calibers, rifle included, add a good single station press for load development and repetitive stuff, like depriming before wet tumbling. (You will one day have a wet tumbler )

You will find it's going to take more of a $ investment as it would have pre-covid......building suppliers will raise prices over anything....they are sky high. It helps to have someone walk you through the process to start but after that it's just a ride on the learning curve.

I learned on the Speer Reloading Manual.....long before internet forums....came with my Rock Chucker Kit I ordered from Cabelas......long time ago. Reloading manuals are full of important must read information besides load data.

That’s pretty much it, my Brother and I started when we were kids and learned what worked by finding out all the ways they wouldn’t work.

Why I know many solutions to problems, I had them all in the past.

The "shellplate" is one of those AP caliber specific "things you need". I'll probably start off with regular practice range ammo, and move on from there. 32 cal wadcutters have never been easy to find even in the best of times. These days - forget it.

I get the "it's not rocket science" thing, but frankly I've taken few NRA courses where I haven't picked up a hand full of good tricks and had a pretty good time doing it.

Tumblers..............yeah..............I'm looking at those too.............
