January 2005 Match - Tiger Hunt

For those who may not be familiar with the general rules of the matches please see the rules FAQ .

You are on safari with your favorite firearm when suddenly, in the distance you see a pair of Tigers. Since you have paid good money, and are on a special hunting preserve, you can shoot tigers but your permit only allows for ONE. That is OK since after your first shot the other tiger will run off.
You sight-in and take your best shot at one of the tigers. One-shot=one-kill is your goal. But this does not always happen. You may be able to move closer to get a more certain kill with your first shot but you get more “macho†points if you can down the animal from a longer distance. Tough choice. Also, these are wild tigers; if you wound them they will likely attack you!

Scoring:
Scoring will be based on the number of shots for a ‘kill’ and distance. The number of shots to down the animal is described below. The ‘range’ (target distance) is YOUR CHOICE. However, I will use the range of all entries to normalize the scores. The longest successful ranges will get higher final placement in the rankings.
You shall continue to shoot at the tiger until:
1) Your shot hits the red ‘kill zone’ circle on the tiger target.
2) OR, you hit the target in ‘non-kill’ zone (i.e. you hit the tiger but not in the circle) 3 times. Three hits in a non-kill zone will down the animal.[Note: The ground under the tiger on the target does NOT count as a hit on the tiger.]
3) OR, you fire 6 times and do not kill the tiger. If you need this many shots the now pissed-off tiger would have attacked you ! This score should be reported as “I’m dead meat†.

The final score you report must include :
THR NAME
CLASS
# of shots to a “killâ€
Target Distance (yards)

PISTOL STOCK CLASS - Standard pistols with barrels 6" or less
PISTOL IMPROVED - Pistols with significant improvements from out-of-the-box or pistols with barrels more than 6".
PISTOL SCOPED - Any scoped pistol
RIFLE STOCK CLASS - Standard rifles with iron sights
RIFLE SCOPED - Any scoped rifle
AIRGUN PISTOL- unscoped airgun
AIRGUN RIFLE - unscoped air rifle

3 entries per shooter in up to 3 classes allowed this month. (i.e. you can shoot up to 9 targets, three in each class; Hint:you may wish to try the target at three different distances, perhaps.)

The target can be found HERE

Just in case I get to shoot tomorrow, this is standing (no rest) right? Otherwise I think I will deploy my tactical tiger bipod cause I want about a quarter mile between me and them.

Griz,
Yes Sir. Standing, no artifical rest. Slings are OK.

Also, in case it is not clear, all shots on the target for each entry must be at the same distance. (You can't take a shot and then move closer for the follow-up shot.)

THR Virtual Match...

A lot harder than it looked :( .
Still hoping for a break in this Iowa weather to get to the range and try a pistol at 50' but we just got 8" of snow :cuss: .

CLASS: Air Rifle unscoped
RANGE: 33 ft
Shot #1 = Hit on Tiger
Shot #2 = Miss
Shot #3 = Hit on Tiger
Shot #4 = Hit on Tiger
SCORE = 4 Shots at 33 ft.

Bill L.

It's either a lot harder than it looks or (more likely ;)) , I'm worse than I thought.

CLASS: scoped rifle, (10-22)
RANGE: 50 yards
SHOT#1 = edge of neck, hit
SHOT#2 = over toe of left foot, miss
SHOT#3 = middle of tiger, hit
SHOT#4 = toe of right foot, miss
SHOT#1 = edge of shoulder, hit

SCORE = 5 shots @ 50yards

Guys, Just to be sure everyone uderstands the rules this month.

The ‘range’ (target distance) is YOUR CHOICE. However, I will use the range of all entries to normalize the scores. The longest successful ranges will get higher final placement in the rankings.

You choose the distance to the target for each entry. If you think you need to be closer to get a good score then you can do that. The longest distance will be more competitive as you are competing against the other shooters to see who can get the best score at the longest distance but you can enter shorter distances.

3 entries per shooter in up to 3 classes allowed this month. (i.e. you can shoot up to 9 targets, three in each class; Hint:you may wish to try the target at three different distances, perhaps.)

Bill L. & griz - you submitted one entry each. Note that we are allowing up to three entries per shooter per class. This allows you three attempts to get a good score. You can enter three times in three classes if you wish.

I'd suggest people try their first target at a short distance and move out from there for their other two attempts. Report all target scores as you may not be able to determine who will be the best until all the entires are tallied using my secret formula. :D

I hope that is clearer.

I intend to shoot more and also another class, just thought I would give people a laugh at how easy it was for me to miss. The irony is I thought I was starting at a close range, I just couldn't hit much! :uhoh:

Griz you aren't kidding. This challenge is greater than it might seem at first. I took a target to the range today. Actually, I was going to the range to shoot my friend's AR for the first time. He loaned it to me to try. So, I figured after I got it sighted in, I'd go ahead and try out our match.

I set everything up at 50 yards. Unfortunately, I forgot to bring a spotting scope or binoculars, so I had to walk up to the target after every shot. :banghead:

Well, after six shots I did not kill a tiger! So, I abandoned the hunt today and just played with the AR a bit more. I'll have to figure out a better strategy.

Gee Guys, I go away on vacation for a week and.....nothing happens with the match? Are we sliping back into a mode where few people particapate in these matches? Please keep posting if you have shot the match.

Hello? Thump...thump.....Is this thing on?

ACP230 - I'm with you! It's been single digit or very low double digit temps here lately. But, I will participate in the shoot! Don't give up on the project! :)

I shot this at the range today. This was on the first shot. Pure luck. I was test shooting my p345 that just came back from being worked on. 20 yds. and I'm mostly color blind. The range officer almost spit his coffee on himself. I looked at him and told him that's it for today. :)

I am interesed photo_guy!
Was just finally verified today for this board.
Do not believe I will be albe to play this month (hopefully I am wrong) but will next month.

How long is the match going on for?

I just ran across the sticky today but don't think I'll be able to get to the range until next weekend at least.

countertop & bwhited - Welcome to the match! Glad you found us.

Normally (unless otherwise stated) the matches run from the beginning to the end of each calendar month. We sometimes extend the deadline a few days and/or overlap a bit with the next month if a weekend falls just after the 30th/31st to give people some additional time.

Since you mention it, I plan to extend the deadline for the January match until 2/4/2005 as I will be out of town* and won't be able to get the Feb match up until I return.

Please be sure to read the rules FAQ that I posted above and look at past matches. It should give you good idea of how things work. It's all for fun. If you have questions about the rules or other details please post or PM me.

* = I'll be at the SHOT SHOW :what:

Hey Phot_Guy, any chance you'll take any photos at the Shot Show? Inquiring minds would like to know!

Well, according to the official attendance rules "NO Photography or Videotaping (Except by those wearing valid SHOT Show Press Badges)."

Since I will be representing a local gunshop and won't have a 'press badge' I probably won't be doing any photography. Plus, I am trying to make this trip as light as possible. The camera may not make the cut!

Sounds like its time for a Camera Phone!!!!

An excellent challenge. Obviously, I'm better at shorter distances.

Okay, here are scores for me and Beetle Bailey.

Our range has fixed distances of 50', 25 yds, 50 yds., and 100 yds, so it pretty much gets LOTS harder with each subsequent distance.

Beetle shot his scoped Enfield No. 4 Mk. I in .303 (Scoped Rifle Class) and his Russian Capture Mauser K98K in 8mm (Rifle Stock Class). Scores:

Beetle Bailey
Rifle Scoped Class
Enfield No. 4 Mk. I
Distance: 50'
Shot #1: Hit on Tiger
Shot #2: Hit on Tiger Kill Zone
SCORE: 2 shots @ 50'

Beetle Bailey
Rifle Stock Class
RC Mauser K98k
Distance: 50'
Shot #1: Hit on Tiger
Shot #2: Miss
Shot #3: Hit on Tiger
Shot #4: Hit on Tiger
SCORE: 4 shots @ 50'

He attempted both again at 25 yds., but ended up dead meat.

I shot with a Ruger 22/45 w/ Ultradot in .22 (Pistol Scoped Class), a Springfield Loaded in .45 (Pistol Stock Class), and an M1 Carbine in .30 Carbine (Rifle Stock Class). Here are my scores:

BamBam-31
Pistol Scoped Class
Ruger 22/45 w/ Ultradot
Distance: 25 yds.
Shot #1: Hit on Tiger
Shot #2: Hit on Tiger
Shot #3: Miss
Shot #4: Hit on Tiger
SCORE: 4 shots @ 25 yds.

(Attempted at 50 yds., but only got one hit before DEAD MEAT. :( )

BamBam-31
Pistol Stock Class
Springfield Loaded
Distance: 50 yds.
Shot #1: Hit on Tiger
Shot #2: Miss
Shot #3: Hit on Tiger
Shot #4: Miss
Shot #5: Hit on Tiger
SCORE: 5 shots @ 50 yds.

(Did not attempt 100 yds. I did, however, shoot my 8" steel plate at 100 yds. w/ my .45, and got 4 out of 5 hits! :D )

BamBam-31
Rifle Stock Class
M1 Carbine
Distance: 25 yds.
Shot #1: Hit on Tiger
Shot #2: Hit on Tiger
Shot #3: Hit on Tiger
SCORE: 3 shots @ 25 yds.

(Attempted at 50 yds., got two hits before DEAD MEAT. :( )

Our buddy (THR member xinul22) was also there, but we couldn't convince him to shoot the match. He just bought a new stock for his AK and wanted to test that out.

Thanks again, photo_guy, for putting this all together! :)
