That was interesting. 1 in 3 (guy on left) wasn't effected for a good 3 seconds and then he was still calmer. Add adrenaline and determination and he would still have been a threat. The guy in the white was immediately disabled, but it seems he flinched before it even hit him. I would guess he "thought" it would hurt bad and made it out in his mind to be really bad before it happened.

I always like seeing stuff tested...glad others are willing to take a hit for the team.:D

i can't even get my friends to let me test my taser on them. where do you find such morons?.....i mean good friends?

Didn't seem to work too well. They could have all still been threats if they were pissed off enough.

I have hosed over a dozen folks with fox 5.3 half of which were drunk and wanted to fight (fox took the fight right out of them)! No matter how pissed you are it's very hard to fight when you cannot see and can barely breath!

Is fox 100% effective no however very few people will be able to fight after a full blast (even if they are still able to fight it will be much easier to run away or gain control of the situation which is a good thing)!

For those of you who haven't been sprayed, it hurts like hell. Get over it. It will stop. If you ever happen to be sprayed, stay in the fight.

The worst thing is trying to keep your eyes open. You may not be able to do it. Your eyes will try to shut involuntarily. We were taught to use our weakhand thumb and first finger to hold our strong eye open. Not the best, but you can still shoot if necessary. You will also have much less field of vision. Scan from side to side often to avoid tunnel vision. The hold the eye open technique should be practiced for other reasons too, such as foreign bodies (sand) at an inopertune time (such as during a firefight).

And don't let the water that they are spraying on you (or the shower) get in the groin. Trust me on that last one. Everyone thinks water is the answer, but a huge fan is really the key.

I have been sprayed about half a dozen times for OC qualifications. Not counting the times I've been sprayed accidently in the process of making arrests on a combative subject. I have sprayed dozens of subjects with mixed results, everything from instant incapacitation, to no visable effect. I have seen hundreds of officers sprayed durring training/qualifications. Very few persons are instantly incapacitated, and are capable of doing a lot of damage before the eyes close. It is a good tool in the use of force continuum, but be prepared to go to another level if needed.

Many departments required you to be a victim during your qualification to use pepper spray or a taser.

I dunno if it is still a requirement. OC burns like heck! Stun guns will really get your attention and either pish you off alot :cuss: or take you out of the fight.

I can't see how that stuff wouldn't work. My uncle accidentally sprayed a little inside his house once and we had to leave for a few hours and leave all the windows open to air the house out. Just reading this thread is making my eyes water.

Man, that one guy was a wimp. That got annoying real quick listenening to his crying.
Exactly my thoughts. But as I never got pepper sprayed myself and have no idea how I should better shut up.

Is simply waiting for the pain to ease the best solution? I mean if this stuff is still in your eye it will continue to hurt or is it swept away by the tears(probably more effective than by ordinary water)?

I got hit with OC in the face and it was a joke.

I have worn contacts for 20 years and my eyes are pretty calloused.
They get dry and I rub them frequently.
This and my love of hot spicey food...well you get the picture.
So hot crap in my eyes is nothing new or incapacitating.

I have not been hit or used the foam type OC.
I suspect this may have a different effect.

Back in school one of my teachers carried a small can of mace on her keychain. A young woman asked her about it. Does it really work? Have you tested it? What if you're holding the nozzle the wrong way and you spray yourself?

The teacher didn't even know how it worked, she just purchased it and put it on her key ring.

She said "Let's go find out" and walked outside the door where she opened the small vinyl case and gave a healthy spritz of mace into an empty hallway, remarking that the spray went further than she expected. A few minutes later a line of students and teachers walked past in single file, coughing and choking, gasping for air, and rubbing their eyes.

The teacher stood up to shut the door and resumed our lesson.

I remember getting Freeze +P for training. That stuff works great...sometimes! Tazers are more effective than spray.

+1 Shooter1. It has varying results, can be effective, but it isn't a magic wand. The operational effectiveness of the big blue guy in the vid was degraded, not stopped.

I rolled up on a fight involving about 6 guys one night. I disengaged the slide safety on my OC, but then in the ensuing mayhem, never used it. I forgot to reset it. :uhoh: At the end-of-shift, I stashed my duty belt in the trunk of my car because my wife and I were going to the range the next day. On the way there, an ammo box shifted and depressed the OC button and the entire cannister discharged.

My wife started coughing and gagging and her eyes started burning. I was driving along, saying, "I recognize that smell" but I couldn't place it. Finally, it clicked and I stopped. When I opened the trunk, everything was coated with OC. It took her hours to feel better. Anytime it comes up, she gets upset all over again. I cleaned out the trunk later that day, but depending on the weather, I would still get a whiff of it from time to time for a few years later.

I've been sprayed so many times as an OC instructor, it doesn't bother me all that much. My eyes still close, I still cough, my skin still burns, but I can fight through it fairly well. For a while, I was testing new brands we were considering using at the PD. I probably took about 15 to 20 hits. I was so glad when I finally just decided on a particular brand. :p
