thurdy-thurdy ammunition

Leverution ammunition sucks in my 70 year old Mod 94. I reload for it now using Speer Hot-core 170 grain bullets over 32 grains of W-748. If I had to purchase factory ammunition I'd go with Remington 170 gr. Core-Lokt.

My supply of 30-30 ammunition is low and old so I need to restock with new stuff. It's been along time since I have brought 30-30 ammo. For the lovers of the thurdy-thurdy what ammunition do you prefer and why?

It is going to be used in a Winchester 94 of course.

Since it is pretty likely the ammo made today is somewhat different than what you have, I would suggest you get a box of each readily available, and do a comparison. :uhoh:

Thank you for this thread, it jogged my memory and I remember where I put my Winchester 94 I haven’t seen since December.

Oh, and it’s loaded with 150gn core-lokt.

A word about the Leverevolution ammo. It does not shoot any flatter than traditional RN bullets. Hornady uses some deceptive practices to trick people. All of the ammo manufacturers show traditional 30-30 ammo as well as most others zeroed at 100 yards in their ballistics tables with bullet drops shown at various ranges. Hornady shows their Leverevoution ammo zeroed at 200 yards, which of course makes it look a lot better at 300. But if you run the numbers through a ballistics program a traditional RN 150 or 170 gr bullet zeroed at 200 yards will be pretty darn close to the Leverevolution ammo at 300. High BC bullets don't shoot significantly flatter even in much faster modern cartridges until you get out past 500-600 yards.

What the Leverevolution ammo does with the pointed bullets is deliver more impact speed and energy at longer ranges. If it shoots well in your rifle I don't see a downside to using it. It's reasonably priced and more impact speed is never a bad thing. Just don't expect it to shoot any flatter.

But to be honest most any 150-170 gr bullet that shoots well in your rifle should be fine. I have a good supply of Winchester PowerPoint ammo in both 150 and 170 gr weights. Not saying it is BEST, but it works for my needs.

My 50 year old Western Field (Marlin) .30-30 with it's 35 year old cheap (Tasco) scope shoots 150 gr Core-Lokt ammo quite well. Federal 150 gr also seems to work fairly well. PPU, not so much.

I generally zero my scopes and test ammo from a bench rest, but practice out in the hills on soda cans, clay pigeons, apples, etc. My rule of thumb is if I am able to consistently hit a soda can at 100 yds in the field, I'm good to go for hunting. The Remington and Federal ammo make the cut, the PPU doesn't. Haven't tried Winchester or Leverevolution but I've had good luck with Winchester ammo in other guns.

I also shoot a lot of reloads, but it's good to know what factory ammo works well in case I need to grab a box when I'm out and about.

YMMV

I'm surprised no one mentioned the Winchester 150 hp. I like them because they work, but you can load & empty your rifle as much as you want with zero bullet deformation.

This is very true. While I have never shot the lever evolution, I do shoot the Speer 130 grain flat point. Compared to a 125 grain spitzer, there might be a 1/2" difference of trajectory over 200 yards.

RL7 will push either of the bullets out of my 22" Handi Rifle at about 2500 fps. With a 150 yard zero, both of the rounds will strike about 1 1/2" high at 100 yard and about 4" low at 200 yards.

I have reloaded ammo for 30+ years. I have dies, brass, bullets for 24 different cartridges. If I wanted to talk about reloading the thurdy-thurdy I would have posted the question on the reloading forum.

Please keep this conversation focus on FACTORY made ammunition. I am sure there are lurkers that are curious about what to use in their thurdy-thurdy also.

Anyone try Priv Partizan, Fiocchi or Sellier Bellot?
I have tried Monarch. I was shooting an average of 4" at 100 with a 9x40mm scope. Strangely the brass was very consistent.

If the PPU and S&B are anything like there other rifle and handgun ammo I think it would be good.

I'll be the odd man out on Leverevolution. It is the most accurate load out of my and my son's Marlin 336s (circa 1971). I have shot deer and javi with that load and it makes a heck of a hole on the other side.

The only other load in terms of accuracy and bullet performance that I'll use is the Federal Premium loads with a 170 gr Nosler Partition bullet. I can find the Leverevolution load at a reasonable price but the Federal premiums are a lot higher.
