So I Turned 21 on Monday, and i can now (legally) own some Pistols. And I was Looking at a wheelgun. Im Looking for a .357 so i can shoot .38's and be legal to hunt deer in Ohio, but with a 3" barrel or so in a medium frame revolver in 5 or 6 shot capacity so I can carry it whenever i get around to getting my ccw, basically an all purpose gun, if such a thing exists. any specific gems you guys have in mind? from a looks standpoint, im liking a stainless model of an SP101 or the like. but thats just me

SP101 is an excellent handgun, but it is a little small for hunting. It could do it with the right ammo if you were pretty close. Otherwise it is a good all-around handgun. it can pretty much do it all.

It is not, however, as much fun to plink with as bigger handguns are. A large-frame like a GP100 soaks up the recoil better.

Grew up shooting a J frame model 60 in 357, and shoot 3.5 mags in a 12ga recoil dont bother me much anymore :) but im just looking at it for hunting in an amount of rounds you can carry standpoint, they only let you have 3 12ga rounds, but as many as your handgun can hold, and I figure i can kill 5 or 6 (shh) w/o reloading with a handgun, anyone know what a stable used price on them run? Gun broker goes from 280 to 500

Maybe a K frame S&W with a 4" barrel? It be a bit more versatile, I'd be hesitant to hunt deer with a 3" j frame S&W.

Find a S&W 6" 586 or 4" 581, they are an L frame and will be able to handle the hot loads for hunting and are still small enough to carry with a good holster.

My advice, get a 642 for carry and get a nice L or N frame for hunting. A Ruger Blackhawk is also very nice for hunting. Do a search for Jim March's Vaqhawk it is a Ruger New Vaquaro with an adjustable from sight added and a Bisley hammer. It is a very nice setup to carry and hunt with.

Here is my Do it all gun, a S&W 65 that started as a 3" round grip that I had a 4" pencil barrel installed and then had the cylinder moonclipped. I have also installed a target trigger and hammer. It is very carryable and will do what I want in the woods with my loads.

The top gun is the 65 and the bottom is a 3" 60 that some one also recommended but mine is 38 spec only so I would not suggest that.

Find a used Dan Wesson model 15. It's a medium framed gun in 357 that you can change the barrel on to suit your needs and they come in blued or stainless.

HatchetBearer:

If you are planning to handgun deer hunt, I suggest having a chat with the Ohio "Game-N-Fish" Guys well before season. Last time I looked at the rules, you had to have a minimum of a 5" barrel .357 cal. Don't try to CCW that thing if shotgun deer hunting, either. Open Carry OK, but not concealed.

+1 on the 586, what a wonderful gun!

and +1 on no (shh) here.

foghorn, you're partially correct, I checked ODNR's website today and you can ccw while shotgunning you just cant use it to "hunt with, shoot, shoot at, or kill an animal" but you are correct on the handgun req's

Brian, Gorgeous Collection, I like the 65

Bellzy, somehow overlooked the Dan Wesson's offerings, Liking it too

and James, I hunt on private land with landowners tags, I can take as much as my freezer will hold, forgot to mention that. only reason i went "ssh" is because some people get pissed when i can get 6 a day, and some guys hunt the whole season to get one.
