What an unspeakably horrible experience, very happy you and your family survived and that you shared it here. With EIGHT armed people breaking in simultaneously, even if all four adults had been armed and well-trained the outcome could have been much worse.

Eight armed people who kick in the front and back doors simultaneously, that is a planned attack by a gang, not a typical robbery. Do you have any idea why your apartment was targeted?

Curious, did the police ever catch the BGs?

Lessons we can learn:
1. Have doors that cannot be kicked in.
2. Have doors that cannot be kicked in.
3. Have doors that cannot be kicked in.

Further, although not applicable to a case like Mater Dei's experience due to the disparity in numbers, my personal feeling is that it's better to have your weapon within arm's reach at all times when you are at home -- locked up in your "safe room" won't help if BG breaks in there while you are at the other end of the house, or comes right in the window just behind where you are sitting.

old lady new shooter, the gang that assaulted us kept asking us where the money and drugs were. I suspect that they expected to find other people in our apartment. We never learned for certain.

We worked with the police and their sketch artists to catch them. The kids, aged 4 - 7 were actually the best at describing what they looked like to the sketch artist which surprised me. It wasn't a surprise to the sketch artist.

My wife appeared on a local TV program (they didn't show her face), the sketches were shown and descriptions were given. The good news is that they were caught and prosecuted. They had committed two murders in addition to what they did to us. As far as I know some of them are still in prison. I haven't kept up with their status. Because of the much worse things they had done they were not even prosecuted for what they did to us and we were not called to testify.

I was actually thinking when I read your post that maybe the previous tenants in your apartment had been members of a rival gang or something.
