Sure it's possible to get it right without a pull gauge, but it's a lot easier to get it wrong. A pull gauge doesn't guarantee your trigger will be safe, it just greatly increases the odds. Use the right tools

If you use the thump test (as mentioned by Art Eatman) and test by pressing and letting up on the trigger then disengaging the safety, you'll never adjust the trigger too light or with too little sear engagement. A pull gauge will not check for either one. It won't change the odds at all
