Tired of state stereotypes?

Yup, Smokey Joe got it right. There are really two states in Maine, Maine and Northern Maine, though it's not readily apparent unless you spend time in both.
The accent is real though, but most of the time you have to go north of Augusta to find it. I can do a fair imitation, though, having spent quite a bit of time up north. But no, we're not all that bad. Then again, of course, there really are places up north where the most expedient method of travel is snowmobile, even to work.

On the gun related note, though, it's a good place to live. Mainahs are, for the most part, apathetic. We have our anti whackos, but honestly, most of us just don't care. We have all NFA, castle doctrine (doesn't even need to be your house, just a dwelling, as long as you yourself are authorized to be there), open carry, shall issue CCW (CFP). Really, the only way it could get any better is to add "stand your ground."

Oh, and being able to hunt on Sunday......GRRRRR :fire:

Alabama CCW..except for.....

"Warning (4) Your permit does not allow you to carry a pistol in any place that serves alcohol or while you are drinking or using any illegal drug." This is from the back of my Alabama CCW permit. (We don need no stinkin' signs) We already know.

a bearded guy wearing Birkenstocks over wool socks, clad in a Columbia or some other REI-bought parka, holding a foofy latte beverage in a Tully's cup, getting out of his Volvo wagon which is still sporting a "Kerry-Edwards" bumper sticker
He was born down here I think....

Hate to break it to you guys, but alot of southern states have some down right crappy CCW laws. Texas, Georgia, NC come to mind.

In MA you can carry your handgun in a bar.

-T
Even in Maryland a permit holder can carry in a bar. In Virginia concealed carry is not allowed, but since open carry in bars is, the permit holder (or anyone) can just wear it openly in the bar.

Every county is actually different on this one. The law gives local sheriffs a fair amount of wiggle-room regarding issuing permits...and what wiggle-room isn't expressly given, they take anyway. I've heard some counties' "permits" are nothing more than a document on Sheriff's letterhead, signed by the sheriff, which you can get at age 18 with no background check done. Mobile County required me to be 21, have lived here for three months, have three "character references", and pass a background check. My permit is a a plastic card with a photo and description (actually, it's essentially the same ID card they issue their deputies!).

Alabama's laws need a serious cleaning-up. I propose Vermont carry. :neener:

Ash beat me to it.

Guys that are complaining about state stereotypes haven't seen REAL stereotyping. I mean the unappologetic, unabashed, from the soul stereotyping.

Mississippi is the cliche stereotype for the nation.

And Starbucks coffee tastes burnt. Where ever I've lived, I have created loyal cult-like followings for Community Dark Roast (www.communitycoffee.com) Before they shipped, I used to have my mother send be 10 pounds a month.

Its no mystery to me why so many people used flavored coffee. You gotta cover that burnt taste with something. :D

Alabama CCW

My permit was issued by the Blount County Sheriffs Dept. but can also be issued by the city police chief or the director of public safety (whoever that is). FWIW, Blount County is dry!

New Mexico: We are a state!

Also, we have pretty decent gun laws. No CCW in bars, though.

Edit: Jorg, you're right.

'84 Diesel Suburban - 20 mpg, paid for
'04 TDI Jetta - 50 mpg, $20,000 purchase price.

Assuming $4 per gallon diesel, it costs me $13,400 in fuel to travel 167,500 miles in the Jetta.
It costs $33,500 in fuel to travel the same distance in the Suburban.

Please note that $20,000 + $13,400 == $33,400. So it isn't until I have driven the Jetta almost 170,000 miles that I start to save money on fuel. This calclulation, of course, ignores any repairs that might need to be done to the cars over the course of this 170k miles. It also ignores the cost of interest from financing the new car. (I know I can't afford to buy new cars outright.)

Edit 2: Interestingly, the math works out to the same break even point ($33,500) if fuel costs $3 per gallon, too. But I have to drive 225,000 miles to break even in the new car. At $10 per gallon, I break even at 67,000 miles.

Well, here on Long Island the stereotypes are......, Oh, never mind, they're all true:uhoh::uhoh:

Yes, the state stereotypes do get under my skin sometimes, but so do the "urban versus rural" ones.

You know, the ones where urban people think that other urban people are open-minded and forward-thinking, and think that rural people are closed-minded and backwards thinking? In fact, I have lived in both rural areas and urban areas (including LA and Chicago). Quite frankly, the urbanites are quicker to pass judgement that are the rural folks.

What ALSO REALLY chaps my hide is the "urban versus rural" arguments regarding gun control...as if rights don't mean as much in the city. You know, something like this...

"Gun crime is largely an urban problem, so we need to ban guns in the city. But we'll be nice and let the rural people have their guns." Boy does that chap my arse...

Just my thoughts...

Heck, I'm in Oklahoma, people still think it looks like "The grapes of Wrath" here. Cripes, one eyed toothless chicken farmers in Arkansaw look down on us as they flush their chicken waste into our water systems. Whne I was in the navy a shipmate from NYC based his opinion of Oklahoma on a trip across I-40 in 1974. He took offense that I said I would base my opinon of NYC on my trip on the Cross Bronx Expressway in 1981. Our State government was founded in corruption and graft and that is looked upon as a badge of honor and a worth while tradition in OKC at the Capitol building. However we do have fairly tolerable gun laws, (recent rulings not with standing) and so far a very pro RKBA/self defense State Legislature.

I live in Rhode Island, the stereotypes are true. Don't come here. Most all of our politicians are corrupt, we have high taxes, the unions control half the state, we've got cawfee milk (which is AWESOME), we don't have the letter r in our alphabet, just an "ah" sound. Oh yeah, we're one of the most leftist liberal states in the country. Most people don't even understand the issues when they vote, they just check the "all Democrat" box. Yeah, we have that, yeah, RI is not a good state.

If you're inside the United States, a Yankee is someone only from north of the Mason-Dixon line.

If you're in the North, a Yankee is someone only from New England.

If you're in New England, a Yankee is someone only from Connecticutt.

And if you're in Connecticutt, a Yankee is someone only who eats pie for breakfast.

Hey, I'm in and from Connecticut, and I am for the Red Sox! Not the Yankees...

But if your for the Yankees,,, There's always next year!

Ha ha. You'd also be surprised how many people I've met who thought Maine stops at Portland and figured everything north of there was part of Canada.

Yup , have come across that . Matter of fact , just watch any news broadcast and whenever they speak of weather systems etc , Maine seems to be left out since they always stop coverage at Boston . Even Our big ice storm that shut the state down only garnered a few minutes of air time . I don't mind though since it keeps the people "from away" from coming here . :D

New Mexico: We are a state!

Not according to the Julliard bookstore, who charged me international shipping on my Cosi Fan Tutte score when I lived there...

Yep, Why doesn't Wisconsin fall into the Great Lakes ???

Because Illinois sucks.....

Mayor Daley, Gov. Blagojevich, Sens. Durbin and Obama.

High Taxes (Going higher if you live in Cook county and Chicago). Stupid gun laws and offical corruption is so rife, they don't even try to hide it.

We are worse then the stereotypes..

Virginia law: Carrying inside any establishment that has alcohol is a no-no.

I'm originally from NJ. And as much as I love living in Virginia, the whole "southern hospitality" is a crock of *****.

LOL

In VA carrying openly in an establishment that serves alcohol is legal. Only the concealed carry in an establishment that serves alcohol is illegal.

Not at all. I think there should be more state stereotypes posted here. I haven't gotten my fill yet of "all CA residents get what they deserve" and "CA should just break off into the ocean because of their laws/ stereotype"

One state I keep hearing about by people IN coleeforneeah moving OUT is "Oregon is so great. Housing is xxxx and downtown is so xxxx" Of course they usually haven't been out of the few MAJOR cities to find out what REAL OR is like. (I hear it's even better!) I've got one co-worker moving there after a three day vacation with in-laws in Eugene.

As a gunner, I'd at least shop around a little more.

Justin

Boy, is he in for a surprise, two thirds of the left wing loonies and all the greenies live in Eugene. Except for Portland and Eugene, Oregon is a pretty conservative state, good ccw laws, legal class III. Great hunting, fishing, hiking, boating, off roading......near mind...every thing here sucks...don't come to vist....go to Washington ot Idaho.
