Well, I'm in Mississippi. Yes, all the stereotypes, ALL OF THEM, are wrong. We do have air-conditioning despite what the movies say, we do have hospitals despite what ER says, we are actually one of the most racially tolerant states (we lead the country in inter-racial marriages), we have "shall issue" CCW laws, and the KKK is more active in New England that here.
Yet, I really do have folks wonder if we have running water, the rest of the nation believes that lynchings are a popular past time, and that we are inbred. Let them believe that. It's fine by me. I'll bet my Victorian home cost less than most folks 2 bedroom ranch-style home, my neighbors are friendly (except for the neighbor whose dog breaks down my fence), our police and sheriffs are generally polite (though we have our share of jerks). All the same, we are really quite civilized (betcha didn't know that, per-capita, Mississippi leads the nation in authors, and most of them aren't Mississippi hating "Uncle Toms" like John Grisham). And no, we don't talk like Forrest Gump (nor do folks in Alabama, my native state).
The stereotype we endure is far worse than the rest here. It remains popular to still bash us. Hillary did so this very week. (And, like I said, we are a "Shall Issue" state).
