To have a rail or not, sometimes not even a question.

Yes, if sounds of an assault are coming from the other end of the bedroom hallway, where my sister-in-law and nephew sleep, or the west part of the house, where my father-in-law lives, I will indeed go on the offensive, and hunt for the threat.

If I am the first responding LEO, and the sounds of deadly assault are to be heard, I will indeed go hunting for the threat, even if alone. I will have four or five light when doing this.
Understood but I was referring to an earlier post in this thread in which the poster wrote, "...hunt down a threat on open ground". That is what had me concerned.

As far as the "Nightstand Gun" goes I think more and more people are using a light mounted on them. I started to offer a tactical light holster in my handgun safe after a few requests and today I sell about 80% FAS1 (w/standard holster) safes and 20% FAS1-TL (w/tactical light holster). A few people will buy the standard holster as well so they can swap it out if they want to.

For me, my HD gun is a second generation G17 and does not have a rail. My preference is no light but I do keep a flashlight on the nightstand. In my house I feel I have the advantage in the dark. Just me and the wife so if something wakes me up and she's next to me there shouldn't be anyone else roaming around my home.
For CCW I want something sub-compact or smaller that is light and easy to carry. That's a G26 no light. I'm not out a lot in the dark on the streets so most likely if I needed it it would be daylight.
