Today I enjoyed the outdoors. I chose to carry......

Well I've been turkey hunting, but that means taking the same old same old guns, the Brown Bess and a cap-n-ball revolver. But I did get the Grandson out with me.

He's getting passable on the call. Not bad, but not "great" yet. An advantage to have two calls going, and of course he can call while I'm ready with the musket. Hoping next year he'll be able to actually hunt...which will mean getting his license this year, and getting him trained on the .410 or 20 gauge.

But of course coffee and brats were on the menu at noon, hot chocolate for him. I took my little firebox stove, but since we had the State Land to ourselves and the Turks were not gobbling, we had a small open fire. We did call in one hen, and ran smack-dab into a big Tom when hiking from blind to blind. That Tom saw us first, and was gone before I could get the sights on him.

Of course you all want to see Bessie again. I know you do.

My side arm of choice was the Pietter I got in a trade recently. She was/is loaded with a 207 grain bullet over 34 grains of 4fg. Hopefully that will go through a moose skull at close range, (like bad-breath distance) should Mr. Moose get aggressive, which should not be a problem this time of year. Didn't see any moose, usually see one every time I'm out there.

I love that you are able to spend time in the field with your Grandson. Those memories are priceless!!! I like his bucket hat! I had one just like it when I was his age😎

On one rainy day we went to the Alcatraz East crime museum.
If you enjoy museums you may want to take a few hours and vist this one in Pigeon Forge.

They have lots of neat firearms 👍
It has been said a person should learn something new every day. For me today, I learned about this museum. Never knew this existed. Will add it to the list when I get back that way.
We made a trip to DC and visited a few sights. Thanks to all of our veterans.

No carry in DC for me. I did add a picture of the handguns that I took with me on my trip.
The Korean monument is the most stirring to me. The eyes on the states look almost real.

Not much news in my favorite thread!?!
You guys need to step up your woods bumming and hiking!
I'm not much help either....we're still trying to get rolling with our spring planting but little April showers keep things dampened down. Just about the time we can work....another front rolls through and makes puddles again.

I took the Honda back to the creek for a little while.
I usually catch Kentucky bass here, but today it was two crappie!
There was a large old pond dam about five miles north of me that failed and drained the water into Panther Creek which in turn drains I to North Fork. Ever since then we catch a few crappie. Very unusual for us to have crappie fishing in our river....but always fun to catch one.View attachment 1207081View attachment 1207082View attachment 1207083
This time I carried my kframe s&w 38View attachment 1207084I really like how it shoots and not too heavy to carry. When I take a 38 along I have six loaded and two speed strips. That's always plenty of ammo.
When I carry my sr9c it has a 17rd mag and I always carry a spare?! That's 34rds!
Why?
I read the "Doc Ford" series by R.W. White. If you like the Florida gulf coast, you would likely enjoy his books. His "Doc Ford" was an ex CIA type that kept a Sig 226 in a oiled CROWN ROYAL bag in his sock drawer.
I have been keeping my 3" 38spl pre 10 in one too, unloaded of course.

Glad you like Doc Ford, AF. Us attuned to SW Florida love the series . Been reading them from the beginning.

Also, I am jealous of your varied SE Illinois terrain with all the different long gun possibilities and different critters to Shoot!

South Florida is so boring!

The thing that I like about the images is that they were randomly picked. No names associated with the soldiers.

My 2nd cousin saw her Grandfather's picture (my uncle) in the memorial. Told her uncle, so he went and found that picture of his dad. Some of the images can be difficult to see different times of day because of the sun.

My favorite favorite stop in DC is the Vietnam War memorial.
My first visit was in 1983 and I have been back at least a dozen times.
Every name is someone who gave all....

Well thennnn
.....here's a teaser from this morning.
A turkey hunt on our northern farm.

I don't know what the concrete tank is?
Water trough? Still?
We have only rented this property for four years...this is part of the non-tillable land. Some of it is pretty rough.

We didn't get a shot but we had two gobblers and three Jake's in the field.

Too bad I can't legally use my 204 Handi-Rifle. I think it would make a splendid turkey shotgun. ;)

I wonder how many states allow rifles for turkey hunting?

Great pictures Farmer....

I'm pretty sure Texas is a rifle state.....but not certain.
I would even like to use my flintlock. 45
I've always wished that my state would legalize small caliber ML rifles for turkey. But, don't think that's on their radar. Right now the big demand is from the "modern" muzzle loader guys lobbying to put scopes on their "muzzle loaders" for big game hunting.

I had a good outdoors day today.
I rode the atv back to the creek with my flyrod and spinning rod.
No luck with my 5/6wt flyrod and faithful black ant. I switched to the collapsible spinning combo and favorite beetlespin. The beetlespin yielded a crappie and an alligator gar within a few casts. 20240505_153832.jpg 20240505_154513.jpg
The gar is a nasty rough fish that can get BIG. You rarely catch them on a hook because they have a bony mouth. 20240505_154245.jpg
I motored on back into our property to retrieve a cell cam that was about overtaken by foliage.
For this part of my afternoon I chose to carry my newly acquired Ruger Mklll 22/45 20240505_162507.jpg
I rode back to the house to find Mrs gone back to town for a church function....so I changed guns....(uhhh hmmm) ...and grabbed my mushroom bag for one last shroom hunt.
The only thing I found was vast amounts of poison ivy. The mosquitoes found.me. .so I jumped back on the Honda and headed for some of our fields.
Too wet to work. But I found bushels of fungi....toadstools...of course, I left them in the field. 20240505_164207.jpg 20240505_185213.jpg
I chose to carry my pre model 10 38spl.

The mosquitoes were getting hungry, and so was I, so back to the house.
