We had a family week up at my Dads house in Northern Nevada over the Thanksgiving holiday. While we were up there my sister, son, brother in law and nephew went shooting. My 23 year old niece, who was born and raised in the Peoples Republik of Berkeley, hit me up and said that she realizes now that her prior stances about guns wasn’t very realistic. She said being a woman alone is getting scarier as society is changing for the worse, and she is pretty much on her own to take care of herself. She ultimately said she hasn’t ever touched a gun, but she wanted me to teach her gun stuff and how to shoot when she heads down to visit friends who live in SoCal.

She came over today and we started with 60 minutes of safe gun handling, nomenclature, grip, stance, sight picture, malfunctions, etc. I used my “red gun” and a matching airsoft Glock 17, for the beginning lessons.

Once she got those lessons under her belt, I also used my S&W Models 15 and 642 .38’s, Ruger SP-101 .327, and 9mm SA Ronin 1911, Glock 19, and a CZ 75 D Compact to show various defensive guns; full-size and compact revolvers, DA auto, striker auto and SA auto.

Another 60+ minutes with these guns, and she was ready for the range. I added my Glock 44 .22 LR to start with, and CZ 75 SP-01 (because I wanted to shoot it). ;)

She listened!! Guns stayed pointed downrange, her finger didn’t touch the trigger until she was ready to shoot, she loaded magazines or cylinders as required, and operated control levers, cylinder releases, thumb safeties, etc. with minimal apprehension or questions, her grip was good, stance was good, confirmed the gun was unloaded when it was empty, etc. (Man, teaching women to shoot is sooooo much easier than men/boys!)

Ammo was Rem 115 gr fmj 9mm, .32 H&R hand load with a 115 gr RNFP over 4.0 gr Unique, .38 loads with 148 gr WC over 2.9 gr Bullseye, and CCI Blazer 40 gr .22 LR.

We shot silhouettes at 5 yards, and she fired every gun I brought. She loved the Glock 44 and the 19, liked the 1911 and the SP-101, was so-so on the CZ compact and Model 15, and HATED the 642. That was, “Too small and it smacked my hands” when she fired it. (Best part is her first, and only, 642 shot was dead-center in the silhouettes head!)

Shooting the 1911:

She put roughly 150-ish shots through all the guns. Most were .22’s but about 50 were 9mm. She was very happy with her results, which is why we started out with a doable shot distance and a nice, easy to see silhouette target.

I was very happy to see how enthusiastic she was to start and even more enthused when we were done. Fairly soon she said she will be buying a Glock 19, and I will be steering her to some training classes to give her a good foundation to build on.

One down, 25,000,000 other non-gun types out here to go.

Stay safe.

OUTSTANDING POST....KUDOS SENOR!!!! I had much the same experience with my Boston, Mass, attorney niece who took to it like a duck to water, changed some of her gun related views, but is probably still a dyed-in-the-wool liberal, politically. Were it not a felony, I'd gladly give her one of my Sigs to take back to Boston...she lives in the South End of Boston. Best regards, and well done. Rod

This right here is how we win.
Unfortunately gun grabbers turn out future gun grabbers in mass and we can only bring them in 1 or 2 at a time.

Outstanding. It does my heart good to see the "change of heart" once they find how enjoyable shooting can be.

Gotta love the G44 -- it's even more fun suppressed.

Good job. I'm glad that happened.
I had my nephew come out here the summer before his senior year in high school and we did some camping, paddling, hiking, and he had some time with my Ruger Vaquero and S&W 586 L-comp, firing 125 grain 38 Specials and 357 Magnum. I don't know, maybe he fired my Single Six in .22LR too. He was kind of a video-game guy (League of Legends) and academic. I think he really appreciated his experience. That's what he told me. He told me he could appreciate it more that summer than he had when he was littler (it wasn't his first time out here). I doubt that he's become a "gun guy" yet, but I'm confident that he's safe from seeing gun owners as radical, extreme-fringe fanatics that deserve confiscation. As a young man in a sheltered life, he probably doesn't sense the vulnerability that a young lady would, but I hope at some point he begins to sense his responsibility. He went on to start at UC Berkeley this year.

I had a more-or-less similar experience with my California niece (a couple of times, took her out to the range). I don't know if she'll take up shooting permanently, but she certainly won't view us in the way that California leftists paint us. And she's an attorney in the Bay Area, so this is an important success. :)

One of the guns we took to the range was a VZ58. She thought that was waaaay cool...

Way to go! I use to always start beginning shooters out with their choice a semi-auto (Beretta Model 70S), or else a DA/SA revolver (S&W Model 34). From there it was a full size 9mm. (Browning Hi-Power), or a .38 Special revolver (Model 686). Nowadays I would include something like a Glock G48 or else a S&W Shield Plus to the mix.

Do NOT, repeat NOT, tell her about the .41!!! There isn't enough .41's to go around as it is...

Good job! I had very much the same rollout with a lady friend and an AR-15 a few weeks ago. Taking the time to explain everything, and do some dry fire, while removing the danger of live ammos, keeping it conversational, does wonders. I HATE it when someone throws someone out on the range with little or no instruction.

 to your niece for being smart enough to wake up to today' world and seeking advice and to you for providing it. Women don't seem to have the "I know everything" attitude that a lot of men do. She might even help you when you need a set of more nimble fingers than yours when gun tinkering.
