Toolbox secure?

Would you consider a locked bolted down truck toolbox secure?

Sure—until the first criminal smart enough to figure out what to do with a pry bar came along. That's not a very encouraging statement, I'm sure, but I've noticed more than a few truck tool boxes with obvious damage of that type.

Sure as long as you're trying to keep someone from stealing the toolbox. If you're trying to secure the contents, no.

The toolbox is stated to be locked too.

I've seen a range of toolboxes, ranging from almost-safe level to sneeze and the hinges will snap.

A bolted down, good quality toolbox secured with a good quality lock should be at least as secure as anything stored in a trunk, if not more so.

Remember, a pry bar will open 98% of all car trunks.

The best you can hope for is to make the crooks steal the truck to work on it elsewhere. This means making it so the above-average crook doesn't want to
a: Exhaust himself working that prybar and listening to the screams of bending metal.
b: Haul the torch over there and light a beacon
c: explosives? Most unusual crook.
d: haul a big pair of bolt cutters around (and if you do it right, even this won't work real well).

And bust 98% of car windows. Things are probably more secure in a trucks toolbox once you take that into consideration.

What is "security"?

If the thief wants what is in the toolbox badly enough, he's going to get it. BUT: with a closed and locked toolbox, how is the thief to know you have something in there he wants? Surely you don't brag indiscriminately about your Beretta Silver Pigeon truck gun???

IMHO, with something like a truck toolbox, you just make it massively inconvenient for the thief, and he'll go elsewhere. Unless he knows you have the crown jewels in there, and has targeted this particular toolbox.

But you have no business leaving the crown jewels, or your custom Dakota rifle, in any toolbox.

You have to keep the equasion of risk & inconvenience vs. possible reward, firmly tilted in your favor.

I'd attach a quick access lockbox of some kind to the truck box to make it safe enough. There'd be some time when your box is open and gun visible and potentially stealable for a snatch and run thief.

Liquid nitrogen, people spying on someone's open toolbox in their trunk using CIA telescopic lens just to see what may be inside if it's opened up-c'mon folks. Security is a relative term, one of the more relative ones we can talk of.

As a portable lockbox to temporarily store a handgun (etc.), a bolted-down and locked toolbox is relatively secure, opposed to tossing it under the seat, or even locking it in the glovebox, or laying on the trunk floor and covering it with a jacket. All require large(r) amounts energy and time by someone to gain access to-again relatively being the operative word here.

You could have the most expensive and (relatively) secure portable lockbox in the world, but someone could take your whole car. Is that secure? Of course it isn't, so we might as well keep all firearms in bank vaults and they must never leave....if we want to be as totally secure as we can. But can the bank then be robbed? Yup-another reletive outcome there too.

So we might as well not have firearms at all then I reckon if they can never be totally, foolproof, 100% secure against everyone even including CIA and Mossad operatives. Right?
