for under $200. To be used for range spotting at 100 - 300 yds.
I'd love to buy something nicer, but budgets are budgets. Cabela's has a few that looked promising, including a Burris 15-45x60. Any thoughts?
 
Yeah the Burris scope is definately THE winner less than $600. I bought one to replace an older 20xX50 Leupold and it is a great hunting spotting scope.
 
Reviving this thread a bit..........

Never thought much about a spotting scope until I now need one.

Question is, what so you look for in a spotting scope for say 200 - 300 yards out? Who are the top three manufactures, and approximate price ranges.

I'm thinking decent at this range for $200 and still have a pretty nice piece of effective equipment?

Any thoughts on it?
 
OK, so I didn't get much response on this question so I did a search on TFL and found several threads about the Pro Optic Fieldstar. Steve Smith and several others praised it highly, and one member ordered one and then posted a positive range report. On the basis of this, I took a chance and ordered one from Adorama in New York.

Mine was delivered today. As soon as I get out to the range I'll post a report.

BTW, $113.00 delivered.

I have the burris landmark 15-45X60mm. It's an excellent spotting scope. I've only used it for 100yds so far. Image is bright and clear. Easy to focus. I ordered mine from Midway about a year ago. I got the tripod bundle.
 
Mike...I'll be very interested to hear how it goes with your Pro Optic Fieldstar......

If convenient, perhaps you can shoot me an email and let me know how it works and who you acquirted it from (direct from Pro Optic?). You didn't say when you would be able to get out to the range and I may therefore miis your report later.

If Steve Smith likes it, it must be pretty decent.
 
Sactown...would you mind saying how much you paid for the Burris. I see that it's a 15X45X 60MM just as the Pro Optic Fieldstar that Mike referenced.

Burris is a name that I recognize in terms of reputation and Kowa.

Mike, I was searching for the Pro-Optic on my browser and see that I can get one on sale thru Adorama for $80 plus shipping and handling. Whht do you think?

$80? If that's for the 15-45x60 then I'd say jump on it. I checked Adorama's website this morning and it's still listed for $99.95.

I probably won't get to the range until Tues. or Wed., though I did take it out into my yard this morning to do some informal scoping of neghborhood landmarks and such...looks very promising so far.
 
Oh yeah, that's a good deal. I'm going to call them and find out why that's not listed on the normal website.
 
I'm glad to see you guys are getting some use out of that old post. FWIW, the one that I suggested had a 45 degree eyepiece which is critical for Highpower competition. The one in that pic is a straight model. Perhaps the 45 deg is listed below. didn't see it.


Very interesting...just searched Adorama's website...no 45 deg model listed anymore! :eek: :(

I bought the Burris Landmark when it was around $150 with the tripod. I think I bought it about 1 1/2 years ago.
 
thanks Sactown....I looked for the Burris with tripod and could find one no cheaper than $180. Without tripod, one can be had for $155-$165. I would need the tripod.

The Pro Optic is alluring at the price. Decisions, decisions.

Per Steve Smith, I looked about for one with the 45 degree eye piece but they were all relatively expensive (+$300).

One question might be...is the Burris twice as good as the Pro-Optic.........couldn't find any reveiw info on them.

No review of the pro optic that I'm aware of, however if you do a search on TFL for spotting scopes you'll find, somewhere in the middle of the pack, a thread with a test of 4 different scopes priced from about $200 and up. It was done , I believe, by Chris at SWFA and it may include the Burris. (I think :confused: ) Anyway, the results are not what you might expect.

BTW, the thread has a generic "spotting scope" title. You have to dig inside for the link to the test results.
 
King: Natchez lists the Landmark for $147. That includes case and tripod. Was thinking of picking one up myself. Have seen them running as high as $190.
 
weeks ago I purchased a 18-54x60 scope at ebay for less than 200€/$... (remind where I live). was a dealer and I traded with "buy it know"-option.
guys if you are looking for scopes check ebay too, sometims there are "lucky buys" waiting ...
 
A short field report on my new ProOptic Fieldstar.

I "spotted" a target that I recenty used at the range at 100 yards and could clearly see the bullet holes. At 200 yards, I could clearly see the bullet holes. At 315 yards, I could see them if I looked carefully but it was a bit of a stretch.

In my view, The ProOptic Fieldstar appears to very effective at 200 yards and closer (and in day light conditions) and may be reasonably effective at longer distances.

It's looking like a pretty good deal at $90 to my door.........
