I've saved some b-day money and am torn between a 3" Ruger SP101 or 4" GP100 either in 357 - practical and a FN Hi-Power - fun.

I've always loved Hi-Powers and 9mm is so cheap to shoot. I'd like to use it in my clubs action pistol, but I never can make the meets. It it is too big to CC and would spend most of the time in my truck or safe. I have a couple of 1911's that I reload for but the HiPower would give me a similiar gun that has cheap bulk ammo for those time I don't want to reload.

The 357 is a powerful multi-use gun at home in the woods or in the night stand. My current snubby is a 38 and gets CC and nightstand duty and I really appreciate the simplicity of a revolver. I enjoy spending time in the woods and like having a sidearm. I usually carry snubby 38 or an compact 45.

But, the HP is sexy.

So many guns, so little money.

Thanks,
tjg

If you think you'd get more use out of the GP, then I would get that. You'd have the same trigger pull in your hiking/bedisde gun as for your carry piece, and there is a lot to be said for that.

That said, are you sure the HP is too big for carry? I carry a 1911 and from those I talk to, the HP is at least as easy to carry in a good holster ( I don't have an HP). Unless you're worried about large 4-legged troubles, the HP would also serve you on the trail, not to mention the nightstand.

I think you'll be happy with either from the sound of things.

I wouldn't say that it is too big for concealed carry. It all depends on the holster & belt you use. I sometimes carry a commander-sized 1911 (4" barrel) and have no problems concealing it. Many people carry a With the HP, you can also get a shorter slide if you'd rather carry a pistol with a shorter barrel (I believe the shorter slide is called the Detective).

If you are interested in buying new, Browing has a model they call "The Detective". It's a High Power with a shorter barrel & slide.

Good Luckwhatever you choose!

Get the FN. They aren't going to be around (new in box) for much longer. The Rugers will still be around.......

Isn't that an aftermarket job? I didn't know Browning offers this version (at least not on their website)

I think the "Detective" conversion is made by FM in Argentina. Sarco's got 'em. They'll sell you the whole gun as well.

I'd choose the FN. As noted above, once they're gone, you've lost the opportunity, and you'll be kicking yourself for passing up a great deal. The Rugers will likely be around for a long time to come.

In an IWB holster the FN Hi-Power carries and conceals as easily as the shorter, FM-95 Detective. I started out with the Detective thinking the HP would be too big, but once I got an FN, I found that the difference was not noticeable. Now I only carry the FN.

Order the FN now, and starting today, put a dollar a day into a jar. Then you can buy yourself that Ruger for your next birthday.
