Tourist with gun arrested at Sears Tower

A Tennessee woman was arrested at the Sears Tower this morning after she tried to visit the Skydeck with a loaded revolver in her purse, police said.

The woman, 56, was stopped by security after she went through a metal detector with a .38-caliber revolver in her purse, said Chicago police spokeswoman Monique Bond.

Tennessee allows its citizens to carry a handgun as long as they have a permit, and the woman was unaware that she wasn't allowed to carry a handgun in the state of Illinois, Bond said.

"It didn't dawn on her that our state did not have the same gun laws as hers did," Bond said.

The woman, who was traveling with her husband, had a state permit from Tennessee to carry the weapon, Bond said. Both Illinois and Chicago have laws prohibiting the carrying of a concealed weapon.

Police are recommending that she be charged with unlawful use of a weapon, a felony, Bond said.

There was no interruption of service for other Skydeck tourists and no one in the building was at risk, Bond said.

"There was never any danger to the occupants," Bond said.

About 1.3 million tourists visit the Skydeck each year.

I wonder if she will lose her permit because of this, does anyone know TN law? I mean this is legal in TN but not here.

I am sure she lost the gun and I suspect that she may lose her permit but I am not sure.

Illinois needs to advertise that they are not part of the United States on their "WELCOME TO ILLINOIS" sign. FUC* that state and its liberal hippy government. You cannot decline the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and the Liberty for All portion of this great country and then think your still part of the lower 48. Screw Daley. He is a POS and will always be a POS. Cut the Federal money to that State as they have successfully succeded from the Union.

Part of the resposibility of having a permit is knowing the laws. She was ignorant of the fact she was breaking the law, not cool.

I don't agree with the law, but I follow it to stay out of hot water, which she is now in.

igpoobah has it right. Ignorance of the law has never been an excuse. She did the crime, and now must pay the price. Hopefully the sentence will be minimal, but she will probably lose her license.

Ignorance of the law is no excuse BUT in a truly free America you would not need a govt. issued permit to carry a weapon for self defense. It would be Vermont style CCW in every inch of the national territory.

Two fantastic Austrian weapons:

One is mechanical: http://www.glock.com/

The other is intellectual: Austrian Economics www.mises.org

She will pay. I just think its misleading that she thought she was in the United States of America and not in a Communist choke-hold regime. A purse is generally not concealed.... and handguns are legal everywhere but..... And for that I am 100% confident that she will pay dearly. Ignorance of the Reich is no excuse!

I think the law somewhere in the Chicago statute of limitations reads "Actung Amerikans, Heil Daley!"

Yeah I am sure I will get some slams for saying it but I can defend my stance of that nut job that calls himself a member of this great land.

wow, all this negativity.

Has anyone bothered to consider that this is the perfect case to get the 2nd applied to the states via the 14th AFTER the USSC confirms an individual right via Parker?

Ignorance of the law has never been an excuse.

Fundamentally I agree. HOWEVER,
With 22,000 GUN LAWS ON THE BOOKS, come on man. At what point did this country become a Nazi Germany? Yes yes, as a CWP holder we musts be super careful and law abiding, but still, 22000 laws ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? SHE DIDN"T MEAN ANY HARM for the love of God. It's a very disturbing state of affairs when law abiding citizens become felons by crossing state lines.

Quote: "Both Illinois and Chicago have laws.... "

haha, that says it right there as far as i am concerned.....they admitted that they arent part of my state.

what a load of crap is right! if she was out of state with a CCW permit, she should have the responsability to know her rights... and if IL dont allow a pistol in the "sears tower" (who would actually think a pistol WOULD be allowed there) she should have been 50 something years responsible and have some forethought about where she carried..

as for the weak 22,00 gun laws excuse.. it dont fly.. its not Hard to learn the ones that apply to each of us, and not all 22,000 do , within our givin living positions... if you are leaving the enviroment in which you are familiar with the laws of yer carry, and you dont wanna catch a felony, be responsabile and learn the laws in the area you intend to travel...

seriously...... SEARS TOWER.... man that like walkin into an airport with a heavy hip...

My stance is: if yer smart enough to Concealed Carry, yer smart enough to know the laws regaurding it, WHERE EVER you are!

I pitty thhose who jump to the defence of anybody who has a firearm and gets in trouble for doing something illegal with it..

Yes but the point is that Chicago (with its safe city streets) outlawed handguns peroid and this lady had one in her purse. So is it concealed? Maybe as a purse could be (and everywhere else in the country) considered a gun case. Sears tower or not Illinois is not a State its a liberal regime of anti's that live in filth and crime.

In a few years Daley will probably have legislation to lop off hands if found guilty of owning a pocket knife. Piss on em.

Im not sayin its right man......... dont get me wrong... k!?

Im just sayin the lady should have had a marble er two rollin around and doin somethin in her head!
Like I said, IF you dont wanna face some time in jail, its not too much work then, to obtain some common knowledge, and publicly available info....

if she would have used some of her 50+ yrs of intelligence, she would not have the problem she ignorantly invited upon herself..

and so we should be mad for her example?!
Hey, its cases like hers that will turn purses into gun cases worldwide........ not the folks that actually follow the law..... and we are mad about what here?!

thanks for the conversation.. respectfully, ip.

So it boils down to two basic reactions, often from the same person.

1. There was never any danger . . . she was no threat to anyone . . . . all an innocent mistake . . . . Chicago PD wants her charged with a felony.
Yeah, that sounds pretty reasonable.

2. Srsly, she thought it was legal to carry a handgun in Chicago? Does she come from a part of Tennessee with no TV, radio, internet?

She made a big mistake and Chicago PD couldn't resist the urge to magnify it as much as possible--into a felony if they can. A heartwarming tale.

yep.. its a cold wold when LEO is involved....

but hey, they are, so if we wanna stay free, we do a lil homework... homework will hurt less that time in the clinker..

it sucks that this is where we are, but its where we are.. it sher aint the old west..
n yeah Don G. like u said, usually from the same person.. but what else are we afforded to observe these days ya know?.. tyring to find grey in a black and white world can be tricky....

respect, ip.

I wonder if the woman is aware that there are places right here in Tn that she can't carry?

Were she to pull the same thing in any number of buildings in downtown Nashville, and get caught, she'd find herself on the end of pretty much the same sharp and pointy stick.

Then again, maybe she has, and just hasn't got caught yet because of a lack of metal detectors?

Sorry, but I get the impression that she's either playing dumb, or is a real dingbat. Either way, I'm rather torn about what should be done to/with her. *shrug*

I fully intended to add the link Gunsmith, my apologies.

I am not sure how to feel. I personally see this as another reason why national reciprocity is a good idea. But nobody seems to want to accept it. Either way she should be charged as she broke the law, and ignorance is not an excuse for breaking the law. At the same time I understand that she was not aware that what she was doing was against the law.

Either way if you say she should not be punished your violating the states rights to make their own laws, while at the same time the state is violating her rights. Its a dilemna that cannot be solved to easily. If the states are not respecting the Bill of Rights then the federal government should step in to prod them into recognizing those rights in my opinion.

Either way we shall see.

Y'know... after stopping and thinking about it a bit more, wouldn't it be funny if a crazy ol' Tennessee woman turned out to be the "Rosa Parks" of the 2nd amendment? :D

Be interesting to see how this one plays out, I think....
