leadcounsel, if the Model 28 you are thinking about was shipped in 1958, it may be what is referred to as a Pre model 28 or Highway Patrolman, that along with the fact that it should be a four screw revolver would add to the overall value of the revolver.
I would go with the Smith and Wesson N frame .357 magnum.

Added:
Anyone think his 28 is worth $850 or $1000!? That seems extremely high.

12 months ago I would have thought that price was stupid high. Today I think may be a little high, depending on condition. I'm going to guess that 18 months from now it would be a good price, not a great price but a good one.

Revolver. I really like the 2nd / 3rd generation Smith autos , but the revolver is a timeless classic.

.....S&W no longer honors the 'LIFE TIME WARRANTY' on 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation semi-auto pistols. The 659 is a 2nd generation gun.

S&W is making all the money they need from the polymer M&P and AR-15 guns so they bailed on providing support for these terrific older guns, and I think it's an outrage!

You should trade for that N Frame Model 28 Highway Patrolman (these are excellent, very accurate and built like tanks), then look for a 3rd Gen replacement for the 659. either an alloy-framed 5903, or a steel-framed 5906, these 3rd Gen guns had a lot of upgrades compared to your 2nd Gen 659.

My LGS has a 5946 for $300 and I'd snap it up if I were going to buy 9mm pistols. I really like the 3rd Gen Smiths but I shoot .45ACP. I'm on Medicare but I am not a revolver fan since I've come to shooting and CC after my 6th decade.
