Trade in barely used XDM for new PX4 Storm?

I would make that trade.

I would trade it for an FN also. I'm not a big fan of the XDs either. They're like Glocks, only uglier and lower quality. (at least the 1st generation ones)

FNs and PX4s are both really nice. The Berettas are a bit more adventurous in their aesthetics. If you don't like the looks, don't buy one.

I've shot a PX4 in 45 with a laser. It was BRILLIANT. Great trigger, great ergonomics.

I haven't shot an FN, but they get great reviews from the magazines. I thought about an FNP 45 instead of my 1911. But I'd already had DA/SA 45s and really wanted to try a 1911.

Let us know what you ultimately decide. You're right to get rid of it if you don't really like it.

Take your time....don't do anything rash.

Shoot your current pistol some more.

Rent or borrow other pistols for comparison.

Then make your decision. If you are still having problems then look into a compact CZ (P-01 here). :D

I have both. Well.. and XD in .40, and XDM in 9mm and a PX4.

The only one I consistently take on range trips now is the PX4. It is a great gun.

You can't go wrong with that gun IMO. And if you don't like it you can almost always trade it somewhere for an XD or XDM because of their comparable going prices. (Not that anyone would want to do that...) :D

Do what Jaybird78 said.

I just bought a px4 compact, and like it for a lot of reasons. But there are definite things on it that I can see as being detractors. Also, some of the compacts (mine included) have had problems shooting low-powder ammo due to a tight dual-recoil spring system. It seems to like nato rounds and +p rounds. I haven't decided if I love the gun or am frustrated by it. I think I'll shoot a few hundred more rounds through it and decide. If I can determine that it's an accurate gun and get the FTF issues worked out with the low-powder ammo, then I may love the gun, because it's nice in a lot of other respects. But I still feel like xdm's and fnp's and glocks and sw m&p's and rugers are going to be slightly better guns.

I like the look of the px4, and think it's a beautiful gun with great ergonomics, but it is quite bulky with an annoying decocker/safety (it's tight and difficult to manipulate sometimes). Both the safety and the slide lock stick out considerably, which can create problems for conceal and carry.

I just found out that Beretta did in fact send out a batch of compact models with springs that were just too tight. They apparently are going to be offering free replacements for owners starting tomorrow. This makes me feel better about my px4 compact, and makes me believe that the gun is a worthwhile purchase if you like the other aspects of the gun.

On a side note, anyone thinking of buying the px4 should check out the compact. It feels to me like the perfect size out of the other two models. (Although a case can be made that it's still to big to ccw with some clothing and in some conditions.)

hi horvath819,

still gonna keep your xdm or do you want to sell it. I might be interested.

Looks like your biggest mistake was buying the XDm in the first place. If that grip doesn't feel comfortable to you, that should have steered you away from it right there and then.

However, I'll bet that if you treat it as if it was the only gun you could use, you'd get used to it and learn how to eventually shoot it well.

That's what you need to do now that you decided to keep it. Make it the only handgun you take to the range for the next few months and shoot it a lot. I'll bet you'll grow to like it and shoot pretty good with it. If you can never get a good feel for it, get something else and get rid of it. Even if you trade it for bullets, at least they will get used.

Don't know if the OP is still looking at the option or not but...

I bought the Px4 in .40 and would not trade it for anything. I love the .40 since my department switched from 9mm. The px4 is an acquired taste like the M9. If you don't like the workings of the M9/92 you won't like it. I do and I do. Xd is a fine weapon but as far as design and function it is in a different class than the berretas.

If it's still on your mind handle the beretta again. It really is a great gun. A bit big, but I don't consider it for concealed carry.

If you do end up trading, make you you keep the PX4 clean and well lubed where the rotating barrel meets the slide.

I've had problems with the 9mm PX4 slide locking up after around 100-150 rounds without a cleaning. It still fires, but good luck reloading if the slide drops down all the way without a round in the chamber. (My area is fairly dusty, which also contributes, but it's enough of a turn-off to me that I'm starting to look for something to replace it.)

Spend your money on additional ammo and shooting time. Changing guns to improve pone's game is similar to purchasing a new set of clubs to improve ones golf game - usually it;s the person behind the instrument who makes the diffrence.

A note on the PX4 .40 full-size that I have mentioned I love in this thread:

I have about 2600 through it with zero issues of any type. Ammo including Federal HST 180gr, Federal Hydra-Shok 155gr, Federal American Eagle 165gr, Federal Champion 165gr, Winchester White Box 165gr, PMC Bronze 165gr, and a mixed bag of about 40 rounds of varying brands that was dirty and ten years old or so.

I am currently torture testing it somewhat. After a moderate lube with Hoppes Elite Gun Oil and Breakfree CLP, we are at 250 rounds and three range trips in dusty Wyoming. Issue-free.

The torture test will end next time I need to carry the PX4 in my car or on my person. I don't play with safety. But I usually carry my Ruger LCP.

The LCP, by the way, "failed" its torture test after three range trips and 200 rounds without cleaning. Not sure what the malfunction is called, but the fired case stuck in the barrel. PMC Bronze 90gr.

Not the gun's fault. Micro form factor, small tolerances.

Anyway, I truly trust my PX4 and find it extremely easy to shoot well. Tried the XDM for the first time two weeks ago. XDM-40. Gorgeous gun, very quality feeling, but felt absolutely awful in my hand, unfortunately.

A PX4 I handled had too large of a grip (when combined with the long trigger reach) and the safety so high on the slide that I almost had to operate it with my other hand. I would personally not make that trade. However, different handguns do fit people differently.

The Px4s come with three different backstrap inserts to adjust to your hand size, and different safety options too. Type F has the safety you are talking about, you can get the gun without it or convert it to remove the safety feature and just use that lever as a decocker.

I was going to agree with many others....XDM is so much better than PX4, but it's YOUR gun, you should do whatever you want to do. I would never even thinking about trading my XD or XDM for anything, but that's just me.

Based on the prices where I buy my guns, NIB XDm 3.8" bi-tone is $699, NIB PX4 4" is $569. That's a huge difference as far as I'm concerned. Why do you want the PX4 so badly? If money was an issue, I could see buying it over the XDm, but the XDm is a fine weapon if you ask me (I own the same model you have, except it's black instead of bi-tone).

PX4 or ??

I have a PX4 9mm full size that's turned into my full time carry piece (from a P239-40). Recently picked up a Baby Eagle semi compact 9mm (comes in 40 too) that I might change to. You may want to check one out.
