I may be able to trade my Taurus 94UL ( 9 shot 22LR revolver snubby ) for a Ruger SP101 22LR with a 3" barrel.
I'd have to toss in a few bucks as well. The amount yet to be determined.
The Taurus is a decent gun. I suspect the Ruger would be better. I have an SP101 in 357, so the 22 might be a good practice gun with cheaper ammo. But I also have a Smith J frame, the the Taurus would make a good practice substitute for.
Anybody got any comments that might help me decide?

Thanks,

I've been looking for an SP 101 in .22 for a couple years now. Best small caliber revolver I ever owned, still rue the day I had to sell it for tuition money. The only reason I haven't broken down and bought a Taurus 94 is because I'm still holding out hope I may someday run across that elusive SP in .22. I even keep some large bills hidden in the wallet for just such an occasion. I'd prefer a 4" barrel, but if I found a 3" I'd buy it on the spot.

I think it's worth it the 94 in trade plus some cash. Do it before the seller finds another buyer.

I've shot alot of rounds through my taurus 94. Probably a billion rounds (YMMV, a little poetic lic. taken  ) and she's still going strong. It's the gun I learned to shoot DA. I mastered that crappy little trigger & now everything else is easy! :D
OTOH, if you can make that trade w/ only a little cash thrown in, I'd do it :

Ruger has stopped making the SP-101 in .22LR, so the value of them will only go up. I bought one last year off of Gunbroker and was thrilled to find it. But then again, I have a soft spot for SP-101s, owing five or six of them.

I sold my SP101 .22 maybe six months ago and don't miss it a bit. It was a typical SP though - overbuilt with a heavy trigger pull. Better than a Taurus, yeah probably.

I've always said that if you like a gun, don't get rid of it or you'll regret it. Find the money to buy both if you have to, but there's a chance that you'll find the Ruger a bit too heavy and too blocky for your taste, then you'll wish you had the Taurus back.

I love Rugers, but since they did in the Security-Six, they've been going for guns that look and feel like they've been chipped from a block of steel. If you like the look and feel of them, great, get one, but you'll never get from a dealer what the Taurus is worth.

+1 for 10-ring and Confederate.

I had toyed with the idea of trading my Taurus 66 for a GP100, but dropped the idea because Taurus brings :cuss: for trade-in. Plus my 66 is a great gun that I like anyway, what with its silky smooth trigger pull. Save your $$$ and keep the Taurus.

Like 10-ring said it, if you can manage the heavy pull of the 94, you should master good trigger control on any gun. That's why I bought mine, good cheap 642 practice. My 94 trigger is fairly smooth (another that I tried after I bought mine was very gritty, like there was sand in the works), but it has a great big wart-like lump about 1/4 of the way through the pull. I talked to the dealer I bought it from the other day and he offered to take a look at it and smooth out the lumpy spot free-of-charge. Nice  !
