OK I saw in your other thread that you bought the Lyman GPR flintlock. You're gonna like that rifle. I have the caplock version 50 caliber and it shoots darn well with round balls. I even get good accuracy with Lee R.E.A.L conicals out of it. More than good enough to hunt deer at 100 yards.

Make sure you get the stock seated in your shoulder properly. That gun has the "Butt Plate From Hell" on it. It will bruise the crap out of you if not properly shouldered.
YES! Done "learnt that the hard way" at the range LOL! Purple spot on my shoulder. Went home and rounded the sharp corners on the tips of the buttplate and smoothed the large burr on top. MUCH better but I know to also place it farther out on the arm!

And wouldn't ya know, liked it so much I bought the caplock version. :D

The idea of a flintlock is cool. No need to rely on caps when the world comes to and end. Just shape a piece of flint with a sharp edge and you have a spark. Add some home made BP and you are unstoppable. Totally self reliant. I just did it a different way. I bought a large supply of caps (8000+) and I have 36 pounds of BP and 4 pounds of Pyrodex on hand. Add round ball and conical molds I have along with 1400 pounds of lead and I am unstoppable too.:neener:

I just prefer the cap lock ignition. But to each his own. I am not trying to duplicate any period in time. I just like the challenge of one sure shot. And I really like to shoot BP guns.

Pictures would be nice.

I know what you mean! Some say flintlocks are the only way to shoot black powder... IDK, I'm just not buying it. I enjoy my percussion guns a whole lot and they are much more sure fire in different situations. They did replace flintlock weapons almost wholesale for a reason.

The perc cap as ignition for muzzle loaders had a short life. They were the answer for the self contained cartridge. The Percussion cap reduced the training time for the Military musket. It was also used to develop the multi shot revolvers.
If you ever visit the Museum of the Fur Trade in Chadron, Nebraska you may change your mind about the percussion cap replacing the flint lock in mass.:)

East bank, You are an amazing hunter no doubt. It seems regardless of the type of rifle you can bring home the meat. We closed out our Muddy Mtn. hunting services in 1976. We always appreciated real hunters. :)

A lot of people praise the Pedersoli rifles and especially their barrels. Take for example some comments from the big bore shooters comparing their respective Sharps rifles.

"Allow me to reiterate that many long-range competitions are now being won with the Pedersoli Sharps. This probably has alot to do with the fact that Pedersoli uses progressive rifling and laps and polishes their bores to perfection....my "Big-Fifty" certainly was. Also consider the fact that progressive rifling requires special machining technology that doesn't come cheap but Pedersoli did make the extra investment for good reason(s). The aforementioned domestic custom makers didn't do this and the results are becoming obvious on the firing-lines across the world, beautiful custom features not withstanding in some cases. Although, any serious long-range competitor knows which custom barrels work best for their chosen application when going the "custom-route"."

"Last years Size does matter at the Raton nationals was won by a Pedersoli . By the way my buddy could not hit the ground at two hundred yards with his Shiloh's , he has almost no trigger time ,it's not the gun it's the person behind it , need trigger time and more trigger time . If I am correct a Pedersoli 45-120 came in second at the world creedmore match last year ."

Probably not progressive rifling in their muzzleloaders, I don't know for certain, but their barrels are extremely well polished.

The DPS Barrels are tops on the Sharps Rifles. Most modern barrels for Sharps are simply rifled straight bores. DPS uses the original progressive rifling and chock bored barrels. These were developed for the long heavy Subsonic bullets. They have been wining over the other Sharps for years.;)
