trailboss is used to make cowboy ammo in pistols and rifles. however onother boards when i try to get iformation for it on rifle loads, i always get "odnt use a pistol powder in a rifle chamber" response.
and thats even in a world that has powder companies listing specific pistol powders as being find for rifles.

well im thinking on some galelry low powered rifle rounds in a mosin rifle, idealy id like to use a bullet with a metal jacket on it. but can you do that with trail boss?

Who ever is telling you not to use Trail Boss in a rifle does not know what they are talking about. I will stand in line to tell them that too. This will be a long line. Im a big fan of trail boss its some very good powder. 6-8 grains of trail boss behind a 150 grain flat nose. .309 bullet for my 30-30 rifle is awesome. i have even loaded it at 5.5 grains with 150 grain. My 9 year old son loves to shoot my 30-30 with it. He is 9 now and has been shooting it with this load since he was 8. So there are plenty of people who have used it in rifles. Just depends on what refle. I doubt you will ever see anyone shooting it from a 50 caliber or anthing.

Hey Bez.

I am with Scrat. I shoot Trail Boss in my 30-30 all the time too. I shot 100 rounds just today. Just got back from the range in fact (including a pitstop at the 7-11 at the bottom of the hill for refreshments and a hotdog).

I cleaned my 30-30 and my 300 WBY Mag but I think I will clean out the 357 and M44 tomorrow, I am just too damn tired....

how does it work with jacketed bullets tho? the company does say only for cast bullets.

well all i have to reload for is a 35 remington and a mosin nagant. not really thinking on reloading 35 remington as that particular rifle needs a new part for the rear sight.

I would caution you about using Trailboss behind a jacketed bullet because it is a very fast burning powder and jacketed bullets take a lot more pressure to engage the rifling than does cast bullets. Burn rate is about half way between bullseye and W231, so a pressure spike exceeding normal levels can occur shooting jacketed bullets under certain conditions. Can it be done, probably, but I would not recommend it. There are many powders better designed to do what you want to do. Good old Unique is one that's been used for reduced loads for generations. I'm sure someone here has a load that you can use.

You serious. you went to angeles ranges. I was there from around 11-4pm. I took my son and my brother in law. I was shooting mostly cap and ball. took my .50 muzzleloader and 2 .22s. Then an old single shot 12. That was to test out some new rounds i had made up in 12 guage. My brother in law brought is 9mm. We must have fired over 1000 rounds easily between the 3 of us. I still have to clean 2 revolvers and my .50.

I was thinking about bringing my 30-30. However i didnt feel like messing with the sites. As the last time we went to angeles ranges. It got a little windy and i had my 30-30 standing up laying up against the rear benches. Well it fell over and hit the rear site. I loaded up a couple of rounds and tried to hit the steel at 100 yards with it. Missed all 3 shots i fired. So when i have time im going to have to take a few rounds and set up a paper target to zero in that rifle again. REally sucks because it was totally set. it was very very accurate. Now its way off

Hey Scrat,

Yeah, I got in late as I had to wait for my buddy to get off work so I guess we got up there about 10 minutes before 3pm. I had to make a quick stop at the loading store for some Barnes TSX 150gr so I could load up some rounds for deer season and BS'd with Ralph who works there for a bit.

In about 15 minutes later, we were at the end of the pistol range shooting at the first 100 yard steel plate target.

I think I remember hearing somebody shoot a ball and cap at the very last steel plate by the clay throwers but I didn't see who it was... just an occasional - B O O M !!!

We were probably within 25 yards away from you and didn't even know it!!!

Too Funny...

I have shot TB in 500 with both pistol and rifle just fine. I have shot in 308 for a subsonic load. They have been with both lead and jacketed rounds.

I think it is best to heed IMR's warning about NOT using TB with jacketed bullets, I loaded 12 rnds of 3.8 grs of TB with 158gr plated bullets in .38spl brass and shot them in a Trooper .357mag the accuracy was poor when compared to the same load with LRNFP. But I noticed a sticky film on the gun and in the barrel, I am guessing that Trail Boss will not burn properly in a high pressure environment, this sticky goo may be from where TB gets its Bulk, and the more you shoot the worse it gets leading to who knows

I'm using TB in all my old bolt action mil-surps behind cast boolits. For my Mosin's 18 - 18.5 grains behind a 196 grain RN 314299 seems to do the trick. (Set your sights to the "500" setting for 100 yard work though. :) )

Have a good one,
Dave

Never trust internet reloading data . .especially mine. :)

I just double checked and for 7.62x54R I've only been loading 16.5 grains of trailboss. My notes say that I could go higher, but I haven't.

Regards,
Dave
