I only use the appendix carry position when on two wheels. I don't want a two pound chunk of metal anywhere near my lower back or siatic nerve if I go down. Your chances of a crash are probably a lot higher than your chances of getting into a gun fight on a bike.

I have a friend who spent some time in a wheel chair after landing on a Ruger Redhawk when he bounced off the back of a 4 wheeler.
 
I always cringe when I see something on someone's belt right behind their backbone, a story I heard was a police officer in a courtroom got knocked over by someone hard and landed on his back and he had a set of handcuffs right on his back bone. Now hes in a wheelchair.
