I'm looking for a good learning rifle in .22 Rim ire. I'm leaning toward a single shot bolt actoin and I like the models that set the safety with every shot, or at least every time you work the bolt. Some mossbergs fit the bill, but so does the Remington target master. I like the idea of iron sites and they don't need to be peep or target. Good old fashion notch and front post are great for me. The gun needs to be accurate.

Today I came across 2 guns. #1. is a Remington model 514 for $125.00 in nice shape with a rear peep site. #2 is a marlin 100 in good shape for $50.00. It doesn't have a safety but you have to pull the bolt manually for each shot. I'm just not sure this is the training rifle I want. Plus I'll shoot this myself for fun every now and then. Any of these single shots will manage 22 short, 22 long (I've never actually seen a 22 long) or .22 LR.

Any thoughts here? Thanks in advance.

For $50 bucks I'de get the Marlin. That way if you get bored with the one shooter you won't have a lot of money in it. Single shots are neat and have their place.

I agree, and with 50 bucks, you can get 50 bucks in diff types/brands of ammo, to find which it likes best. and the marlin will be very accurate as well.

Now there are tons of other training type rifles out there, and they will cost from 100 up to 500 bucks each. But starting here is just fine.
you could also get a cz trainer, and put in single shot adapter, and that would be great. Also a new marlin 25 will be good as well.

I would buy the Remington - then for $50 , I would invest in the Marlin.

I've had a J.C. Higgins Mod 41 aka Marlin 101 (no scope rail) since I was 12 <cough> 40 or so years, and it has been nothing but accurate and always fun to shoot. As Mr. H. Amish has stated, get em both!

My first rifle, 51 years ago, was a 514 and I still have it. It is a total tack driver. You can't do better and that is a steal.

I'd vote for the Marlin 100. They are great rifles, and $50 is a steal!

I learned on one back at Boy Scout camp back in the 1960's so I am biased, but I bought one recently and one of my 12-year-old granddaughters approved of the choice when she shot it earlier this month.

Great shooters and simple to maintain.

If you have the $$$, I'd buy both:neener:

It is not a good idea to dry fire a .22 rifle, but I'd have to break that rule and try the trigger on each rifle then go with the one with the better trigger. I can't tolerate a hard, gritty, creepy trigger.

My guess is you'd be more satisfied with the Remington. But both sound like great deals.

Thanks for all the feedback. I really want a Rem Targetmaster, but based on price and all this feedback, I don't see how I can go wrong with either.

Thanks again.
