I have an old 1100 just sitting around doing nothing, I want to get into trap and skeet. What range in Northern Houston would be a good place to start, not really interested in leagues, Carters? Gun Emporium in Conroe?

How much does a round cost and how many clays are in a trap or skeet round? As I know nothing really about this. thanks

If you ever make it to College Station there is a nice place here. www.gunsmokeshootingrange.com

Two skeet, one trap "field", one five stand and a 100 round sporting clay course. Laid back, you can "pull" for yourself without them around or they will be happy to pull for you also.

American Shooting Center off or Westheimer in Katy is one of the best...also has pistol and rifle ranges up to 500 yds.

Carter's Country in Spring has skeet and trap, I don't know about the other locations. Don't know what it costs, but you could call and ask.

Carters is your best bet on the north side. That is the only location they have that has a range. There are 25 targets (1 full box) in a round of both skeet and/or trap. Last time I was there it was about $7.50 a round, plus some extra for the trapper as a tip if they do a good job. But if I was closer to Conroe, I would probably go there. One other option is the Thunder gun range on FM 1314. I have not been there in a while, so I don't know what they offer, you might want to call them.

Carter's, off Treaschwig. That's where we shoot.

Springmom, I read your blog ( I have a few Orthodox icons and have given them to friends and family as gifts) and looked at the icons you have on that page. I read your blog and saw that you went to Cape Cod and ate at Cooks which is funny because I grew up on the Cape (Barnstable)and ate at cookes all the time. They really have the best seafood I have ever had and its very popular place in the summer. The cape is a great place, although I do like Houston a lot since I can actually afford to live here. Small world!!

Anyone want to recommend a trustworthy and quality gunsmith in Houston? Thanks for the help.

One of the best I've worked with.

My dad had a fair bit of stuff done by Freer and was always happy.

There's also Briley (the folks who are famous for their shotgun chokes), they do rifle, pistol, and shotgun gunsmithing. I have a S&W revolver there right now for an action job, tuneup, and refinish, we'll see how it goes.

I shoot at American Shooting Centers with one of my friends pretty regularly. I really want to join the Greater Houston Gun Club though - it looks amazing!

Sometimes Briley is good, other times they can be a pain. They ruined a shotgun barrel when they placed the ports slightly off center, and would not do anything about it.

You might want to try Vandenberg down by Ellington field, if your are in the Clear Lake area.

Phantomak: That IS funny. Next year my DH is coming with me on that road trip, and we've already decided (ok, well then, *I* decided) that whatever time we get to Hyannis, we'll make sure to have Cooke's before we head to the island.

And if you ever need a handwritten icon, you know where to come. :D

i don't know how far north for "northern houston" you're talking, but since you mention gun emporium (i've never shot skeet there, but i've used their rifle/handgun range quite a bit), i'd also mention "creekwood" which is on 105 in conroe (http://creekwoodskeetandtrap.com). it's a really nice facility, and as an added bonus has a nice little pistol range. i personally frequent gun emporium, creekwood, and shooter's station as they're closest to me; but for skeet i gotta say creekwood looks to be the nicest.

How is shooters emporium in conroe in terms of pistol and rifle range? What type of people go there? Overall how is it?thanks

you mean "gun emporium" or "shooter's station"? :)

shooter's station in an indoor range with, i think, 25 yard lanes so no rifles (but i'm told you can use pistol-caliber carbines -- like a .22 or .357 lever gun, but 25 yards isn't much for that and is mostly useful for handguns, obviously).

gun emporium is probably what you were asking about though -- it's a pretty typical outdoor range, i'm not sure how many stations they have but i'm going to say 30'ish maybe. if you're looking at the stations from behind, the far left would be for short-range (handguns) and the far right for long range (up to 200 yards). it's a bit "rustic" (the path out to set your targets is pretty bumpy, and depending on the time of year there's some hefty weed-growth that can get in the way of some target areas, etc) but it's not bad at all. i kinda like the country feel of it. they charge by the gun, not by the shooter -- which is good and bad. means you can take a kid or your buddies and not get charged a ton, but it also means if you want to take 4-5 guns to pop off some rounds, you'll pay for it even if it's just you alone. their policy is such that if there's only a handful of people using the range, they don't have a range officer and it's up to the group to work out cease-fires. once more people show they'll get someone out there to run the range. if you're fortunate enough to be able to get out during the week, the earlier the better. i've shown up when they open on a weekday morning and been able to shoot for a couple hours with nobody else around. on a nice spring or fall day, that can't be beat. fridays and saturdays are their most busy times (as is any other day starting in mid afternoon), and they're closed sundays. i've not had any problems with anyone when i've been there. i find a lot of father & son/daughter groups come when i'm there so there's been a family vibe which is nice. like i said, i typically aim for the slower times and don't really go a lot when it's very busy so your experience may vary.
