I'm heading to see my friend in Arizona in a month, I live in Illinois. We're going to do some hiking and camping in the woods and would like some protection.

I have a Glock 17 9mm, what are the difficulties in shipping a gun? What about ammo? He said the laws there are very relaxed regarding guns, possession, etc, where in Illinois, things are very strict. Any help is appreciated.

How are you getting to AZ? Shipping a gun will be pretty annoying, but if you have an FOID, you should be able to check it on the plane and bring it, no problem. Open carry is legal in AZ, so once you are here, you should be fine, especially in the woods.

My first advice would be to not go back to Illinois!

My second advice would be to take it with you. The handgun would have to be shipped via air either UPS or FEDEX and would be relatively expensive. Does your buddy have a gun he could loan you while you are there?

Yes. Absolutely!

I will be flying - I can take a gun on a plane? And also Open Carry legally?

Once again, can I do this? Can I take it on the plane? There is a shotgun there we can use, but I figured a pistol would be easier to tote around

Wow...I guess living in Illinois my whole life makes real freedom seem unlikely haha

Yes, you can take your gun and ammo in checked baggage. There is plenty of discussion about that here on the boards. You will need a hard sided case for the gun and a lock that only you have the key/combo to for the case. Ammo in original factory boxes would be best. When you check your baggage, you tell the counter person that you have an unloaded pistol to declare. They will check that it is unloaded, you get a tag to fill out that goes in/on the pistol case. You lock the case up, put the case in your luggage, lock your luggage with a TSA approved lock. You will go directly to TSA screening where they will xray your bag, maybe have you open the case again to verify unloaded (I recommend just having the slide locked back) and off it goes.

The ammo can either be in the gun case or just in your luggage, but must be in a suitable container - the magazine is not considered suitable because it does not completely contain the rounds. That's why factory packaging is the best bet.

Once you get to Arizona, you can open carry, except in the standard prohibited places and I am not sure what those are in Arizona, you would have to check into that. I mean prohibited as in courthouses, maybe bars (not sure), schools, etc.

Opencarry.org - the Arizona forum....

Wow NavyLT, I didn't realize I could take it on the plane. Thanks for the tip I'll look into that.

Joemal, also be sure and call the airline with whom you'll fly to Arizona and get the exact procedure they require you follow, to carry a gun in your checked baggage. Some airlines have different procedures.

Yes, in your checked baggage, unloaded. You'd probably be better just buying some ammo in a local store when you get there. You'll need to declare it to the counter person, fill out the tag, etc........allow a little extra time

JoeMal, pay attention when you are in Az. you will be amazed at the number of OC as well as CC (who don't care if you see).
Get the phone book out and check out some of the gun stores too. Ill. will be a foggy memory.
Enjoy your trip.

Yeah, my friend said there are TONS of people who open carry and to expect it. I will definitely check out some local stores. He's a felon, so he's really pretty scared around guns just because they can get him into a lot of trouble....but I'll be looking :)

what part of AZ are you visiting?
Phoenix and Prescott/Prescott Valley area

I lived in Prescott for many years, lots of good gun shops in that area.

J&G Sales
The American Gun Shop
High Country Guns & Knives
High Noon
Bill's Trading Post
Prescott Valley Guns (My personal favorite)

Thanks a bunch I will keep these in mind. I think I've decided to just check the pistol and buy ammo there. I called my airline and went over everything with them, things sound good I'm glad I asked. Thanks again guys for letting me know that I could do that. I really thought guns weren't allowed on planes, regardless of circumstances.

When you get to AZ, first, WELCOME!, then second, get you AZ permit. Same prices as resident, no differance. We have plenty of room - but can you put up with the heat?

Enjoy your stay in AZ!

Stop by Scottsdale Gun Club and rent a few machine guns while you're out here ;)

Pistol Parlour in Mesa is a great little shop too if you're looking for anything to ship back. Obviously you HAVE to go to J&G if you'll be in Prescott.

I was raised in Bloomington/Normal (Towanda actually), Illinois and lived in Chicago in my early thirties, then moved to AZ. I love the freedom out here! The heat gets old but the freedoms make up for it.
