I'm heading to Colorado for 8-10 weeks and am driving, so my route will take me through Kansas. In researching this, i know that CC is prohibited but open carry is purposefully vague to say the least.

Does anyone have information regarding open carry while driving and in certain localities, specifically Salina; Topeka; KC, KS; the KS Turnpike & rest areas; and any other localities along I-70 for when I make pit stops. I'm leaving Wed. so any info would be appreciated.

Check Packing.org but I believe you would be in violation of KS law if you have a gun in the passenger compartment at all.

We put firearms in a case in the trunk and ammo in a separate container before entering Kansas.

Yeah, but then you'd miss getting Cozy Inn burgers in Salina.

Kansas has recently clarified their transport laws - just enough to let you get a gun in your trunk to go hunting or sport shooting without leaving yourself open for trouble. Used to be vague as to whether it was okay to even transport firearms. Open carry is technically legal in statewide, but most municipalities have restrictions.

Kinda wierd in a state that for the most part is a rural, gun-friendly and hunter friendly place, we're one of the last hold outs for CCW.

With exception of military service, I lived in Kansas many many years, working in most of the major cities. I have NEVER been asked, or have never known anyone who has been asked, if they have a gun in the car or on their person. Your results may vary.

Having been stationed in Kansas I can't say squat about thier gun laws; but I can speak to driving through it. Your route will take you right past Fort Riley (look for Junction City) There you will find the Custer Museum plus a huge display of Iraqi vehicles and equipment captured during Desert Storm. Look for a HUGE cannon on the left side of the freeway and large red and white water towers on the left and you are there.

Ft. Riley used to be an open post, meaning you can enter and drive around for the most part. I havent been there since 96 so things may have changed in those regards. The mueums and the original fort's buildings are right off the freeway by the airfield, you can't miss them.

Don't forget, Dorothy's house from the Wizard of Oz and down in the south-west corner of the state and Dodge City is nice to see.

Driven the Sunflower State many times

I used to live in Denver so I've driven through KS many times. Once past Salina there's not much to see, so I'm not keen on going that way again. NE would be a nice detour, a river-side drive almost entirely into Denver, adds only 100 miles to the trip and is more gun friendly!

This is one trip where I'll have to miss Post Rock Country and Bob Dole's hometown!

Hey why don't you stop on by here at Ft.riley! i am bored out of my mind! I have driven from n.c. my home town to kansas many times and it is one long drive. I personally carry my weapon, but while in the vehicle I have it out where it could be seen by any officer that walks up to the vehicle, but the militay id works pretty good and it normally dosen't come to anymore than a 5 minute conversation about the weather and woman and I am good. Be sure you have that weapon close to you in certain parts of kansas city, it is pretty hairry in some parts. St. loius to if your journeys take you there that can be ruff too! Have a safe trip!

But you can't take firearms onto a military post, and if he's traveling through he won't have any place to stash them while he tours the post.
