I'm a Canadian who is thinking of Joining a range in Vt.
I know that other Canadians are members of this same range.
I know that there are a bunch of hoops I will need to jump through to get all the paperwork in order to do so legally and that's ok with me.

My question pertains to transporting an AR-15 from Canada to Vt.
To get to this range I will need to travel through NY if I wanted to take the shortest route.

I know that in NY State flash hiders, bayonet lugs, and telescoping stocks are not permitted. There are no such restrictions in Canada or Vt.
Will I need to go around the long way to avoid NY State or is travel through such a state permitted?

Thanks in advance

Even a minor legal encounter will cost way more than the cost of driving a longer route.

Avoid New York.

They arrest, charge and threaten with felonies out-of-state people with valid handgun permits issued by their home state.

God only knows what they would do to an out-of-country person with an eevil black rifle.

If you are OK in Canada and OK in Vermont, take the long route that keeps you safely in Canada and Vermont. And post some pictures. I hear Canada and Vermont are good scenery even in the worst dead of winter.

If you kept the gun unloaded and the gun and ammo properly locked up in accordance with FOPA, 18 USC 926A, and did not stop in New York for any longer than neccessary and for any reason making it a destination, you would be covered under FOPA.

That being said, it would cost you $100's of thousands of US dollars and several years to fight an arrest and conviction made by New York State.

Funny, huh? You gotta pass through this odd little police state on the way? As an American familiar with American BS, I'd say that I concur, go around NY. I understand their laws are being challenged right now, but I'm sure you don't want to be the one to test our system just like I wouldn't want to be the one to test yours for whatever issue.

Welcome, good luck, and have fun!
